View Full Version : English on board, US Navy dive alarm, health bars over ships...

I just saw SH5 film in Youtube. First thing I noticed was totally crewless conning tower. Then I hear english on board. And hear US Navy dive alarm. And finally there really is a healthbar over a ship in sight (heard about it before, but thought someone was joking).
Jeez! :damn:
Why in earth it's so hard to do these things right, right from the beginning?!? DRM sucks, but Neal might be right. There might be bigger problems waiting just behind the corner... :damn::damn::damn:
Some sound file is easy to fix, sure, but I'm starting to get worried about what else we might find...

You don't know what stage the game was at when those shots were generated and the ship health bar could be for a lower setting of realism (arcade). I'm sure the reviews of SH5 will be straight talking.

Health bars are an option that can be turned on or off from what we have been told. Conning tower empty could be for any number of reasons related to gameplay, and not a bug or flaw in the game itself. As for english language - don't know if they will have an option for german sound or not - but for many players an english language ability is a necessity, because not everyone understands German.
ohh yes. that us dive alarm is ****ty like hell. english on board? ok. but not only english. that will be a nightmare

That's true. Still I'm surprised to find US Navy dive alarm from something which should be U-boat simulation in near future. Why to do same job twice, you know...

Well, that's good to know! Thanks for the info!

Meeec!!! Rushed illogical rant!
Conning tower crew is in, just look at the latest screenshots (those that were up, taken down, and then uploaded by a forum guy here). Pics without the crew are pics with an older beta version. The one we saw at Copenhaguen didn't have any crew at the tower or deck gun either, I asked, and I was told they were going to be modelled in, eventually. The same goes for the alarm sound, which we also noted, and it's of course just a resource placeholder.
Don't jump so fast to those conclussions until we test the game ourselves.

Dear Marte,
I was talking about Conning Tower, not Bridge, nor Deck gun.

Doesn't really change my original post. I was told that only the interior had crew at the time, for me, that included the interior of the tower as well, who knows, maybe there's crew in there in the final version.
My original point was that you shouldn't jump to conclussions, specially about matters like "there's no crew in X", or "the sound of X is crap or taken from SH4/american subs", or "the texture of X is not of the right color". I understand being mad for DRM, but not the kind of thing you're talking about in your post, not when we've only seem pre-beta screenshots, and we have little to none information.
Cheers

Yep, Marte, I see your point. And really, I have tried to avoid jumpig anywhere, but I still can't see much of point to include US Navy dive alarm to the U-boat sim when, as we know, some more appropriate sound file could easily be used by devs. And that was my point; why these things can't be done right at once? Why to do these kind of basic things twice?
That's all.

The conning tower should be empty. Unlike the fleet boats of the USA that were controlled from the conning tower (i.e. helm, radar etc were stationed there), the u-boat conning tower only held the attack scope. Control stations were in the control room.
Pretty sure I'm right about that. Unless you are meaning 'control room' when you say 'conning tower' then there is no problem.

This is how SH3 and SH4 were as well. Every ship has HP so enough damage will cause "death=1." However there was also a way to sink a ship before HP=0. In vanilla game it was most likely to kill a ship by HP other than sinking but mods gave HP=99999999999 so the only way to kill a ship was by sinking.
I'm guessing the same for SH5... arcade HP=0 kills for ships until there is a mod. UBI thinks we are all impatient and won't buy a game unless every ship hit is a big orange fireball like the movies.

Things I see as game breakers/makers for SH 5(exludes DRM, talking gameplay stuff here) are
German voices(least optional) with the text still in english.
crews in appropriate places.Hated in SH 4 how the dive planes were always manned, even when on surface, the helmsman was in the control room. Now U boats are different but need to be in correct places.
authentic german sounds such as dive alarms.
few to no bugs
no huge historical inaccuracies or omissions
plenty of ships....face it, SH 4 stock did not have enough
no bs like the constantly spawning planes in SH 4 stock.
smart/capable escorts, no pushovers.
no dead zones in places where should be plenty of traffic.Always killed me how SH 4 stock had no traffic in places like Sea of Okhotsk, Marshalls, Gilberts, Carolines etc Although in the ATO, want traffic where it should be.
Already pretty pissed the war ends in 43 and only one type of u boat, just upgrades over time.Thats just cheap if you ask me.
I hated the U boat patch because it kills immersion when your german crew are speaking english, give me an f'n break.Do what the modders did, german speech, english text in the box if desired, simple.

Hopefully, it won't stay like that for long. If it does (beyond release), maybe it will be an indication that SH5 wasn't really what was expected, and now that would be really bad. :nope:

Well, even if it's all new code (binaries, executables...), external resources could stay pretty much the same without functional problems, and since SH4 was the last sim to come out, they got its resources, being it the closest thing at hand to use. And I totally understand it. If I wanted to get something working fast, without having to nitpick sounds and all that stuff, I'd get whatever I have in store, even if it's wrong at first, and then correct it later, maybe before release. But details like that, which are normal of unfinished versions, shouldn't darken the functionalities behind them. :DL
Or you could just blame Ubi for the DRM. :rotfl2:

I am hoping there will be a realistic mode in the options that has compartmental based flooding, etc. They can put all of "arcade" features they like in the game as far as I am concerned, as long as they can be turned off with a realistic option in it's place.
