Hi All,

Since I'm planning to sit out SH5 - at least until the DRM issues are resolved - I was wondering what are the *must have* mods for SH3? I'm surprised that there isn't a sticky for this. Since I haven't played SH3 in a few years I assume that:
- I need to patch the game to 1.4b
- Install the GWX 3.0 mod

Is this the correct procedure? Can the 1.4b patch be installed on top the 1.0 game or are intermediate patches required?

Are there other mods that are must have? Is there a "gold standard" for the mods to apply?

What happened to the "Real U-Boat" mod - did it morph into GWX 3.0?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Zakarpatska

PS. I did search, but I found a lot of threads with somewhat contradictory information.

Welcome! :woot:

I'd suggest JSGME as well. It is a very handy tool to enable/disable different mods (nor supermods as GWX though).

WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:

I'm surprised that there isn't a sticky for this.
There used to be one. More than one, actually. The problem is that so many conflicting mods fall into the 'Must Have' category that you can have several absolutely necessary can't-live-without-them mods that conflict with each other.

The supermods are a great example. People who use GWX will tell you that it's the absolute best. People who use WAC and LSH3 will also tell you that those are the absolute best. And they are all correct.

Is this the correct procedure? Can the 1.4b patch be installed on top the 1.0 game or are intermediate patches required?
The 1.4b patch is the only one required. It contains the contents of all previous patches.

Is your game a new copy? If so, it's probably already patched.

What happened to the "Real U-Boat" mod - did it morph into GWX 3.0?
No, it morphed into NYGM (Not Your Grandmother's Mod).

PS. I did search, but I found a lot of threads with somewhat contradictory information.
That falls in line with my first comment. There really is a lot of contradictory information, and sometimes it's all true.:dead:

Okay Jim, once I download the Grey Wolves mod, what do I do with it? Do I have to manually insert files into any particular directory, or will it automatically search for Silent Hunter on my hard drive? I didn't see any instructions when I clicked on your signature.

I have already patched to 1.4 and installed Commander.

GWX 3 comes with its own installer. Just run the exe and point it in the direction of your game directory.

After you have run it, look in the directory for JSGME, GWX also installs that for you, along with a nice selection of additional mods to play with.

And don't forget to get hold of the 'GWX3 GOLD Config Files for SH3 Commander' file. You'll need that if you are running GWX and Commander together.

Thanks guys. I was looking at the features of GWX, and it seems to more of a visual improvement, not really a mod to game play. What I am looking for is a mod to put ships in enemy harbors and a way to utilize other bases. For example, how do I refuel and rearm in another friendly base?

thanks

GWX does all that... Milch cow, training base... accurate flotillas, in the med, asis campaign...
as for refueling in a direndly base, its the same procedre as in home base. sail to port, exit patrol, start a new patrol.

GWX+eyecandy only?
no way. I ve opened the merged campaign file yesterday and Boah they even have bismark running in circles...

I'm wondering if there was some way all the various SH3 super mods and then individual mods such as OLC or the new interior mods such as open hatch and diesel interior could not be placed into one easily accessable spot where all can mix and match according to their tastes - Some information re conflics between various mods would be vary helpful

I imagine following the release of SH5 there will me a mass migration back to SH3 - so if its at all possible the concept as outlined above above would be a real help to us rats who thought that a new game in a series would represent a natural progression, as opposed to a natural disaster

Thanks for your help, everyone.

I installed everything. It looks good, However I noticed that with lots of ships on the scene, my computer bogs down and the frame rate goes into the toilet. I guess GWX must increase my use of RAM. Would more RAM be the cheapest solution?

I have thought that as many folks might be returning to SH3 following the release of SH5 I wonder if any one's thought to actually work on the mods outlined in your email to make them all finally one big happy mod that encompasses the best of all

Just a suggestion

I d/l and installed v 3.0 Gold onto my desktop a few months ago. Now I think I want it on my laptop. Is there one place where the GWX v 3.0 (Gold) are all bundled into one file for d/l (and then extraction from archive)?

I have the regular SH III on my laptop and now realize its kinda dull, having played the Grey Wolves mod on my desktop.

Not sure, most likely Id say yes, but Im no computer expert. All I can say is more ram is pretty cheap compared to other computer parts and well more ram NEVER hurts:know:

Thanks for your help, everyone.

I understand you there. My machine isn't the best either. I hope to be getting a new system by the time spring rolls around, or at least by the time school is out. (Star Wars: The Old Republic, here I come!!!!!)

Two solutions other than buying more RAM are to:
1) Enable "Lite Harbor Traffic" using JSGME. If you downloaded and installed GWX 3.0 correctly, you should see it. The name is self explanatory and helps really helps people with low-end systems.

2) If you have SH3 Commander, (If you don't go get it. Now.) then you can chose the option to start your patrol at sea, far away from the crowded harbor. One problem I have with this feature though is if you are in a flotilla based out of Kiel, because if you have this enabled then you will start outside of Kiel to the east of Denmark, forcing you to either go around Denmark, or back into Kiel.

I hope this helps you. Good hunting!
