View Full Version : What if the new DRM had an Offline Mode?

A lot of electrons have been pushed around discussing Ubi's new anti-piracy scheme. I find myself in the "not exactly thrilled" camp, but at the same time I understand the desire to cut into piracy. The problem here is the delicate balance between making it harder to illegally copy a game, and imposing on your legitimate paying customers.
Ubisoft appears to have implemented their own version of Valve's successful Steam system. Unfortunately, they have neglected to emulate a critical component of Steam, the OFFLINE MODE. To me, this seems to make all the difference in the world. If Ubi's new system included such a mode to allow offline play, then I think most of the potential problems (travel, poor/slow connection, etc.) would be eliminated.
What say you, sailors?

Yes. That is all I want.
Then I can get back to complaining about the short game, one type of ship, and horrible GUI.

Yes, if it authenticated once at startup and then left me to my own devices, I would not have an issue with it.

Personally I have nothing against anti-piracy systems. But I do not like the fact you have to stay connected while you play. My greatest concerns are about the possible (not certain) unreliability of this system.:hmmm:
So how about an offline mode? Yes, for me at least, it's a good idea.
But I would like to have a backup copy also...I guess they could provide an online authentication service and the possibility to make "certified" backup copies for the registered owners of original sh5.:03:

I could live with that. I always register my games anyway.

fine with me
I'm just a poor student:O: and thus a crappy connection is all I can pay. I simply can't afford to let SH5 drain my bandwith.
An offline mode, like steam has, would be good.

Offline mode and it will all be fine.

I'm pretty sure that's what everyone wants, including me.
I see no use in keeping my game-saves in a "cloud." They don't take up too much room at home.

As nice as this would be, Ubisoft must have considered this option and rejected it...at least for now. I hope they reconsider. Their sales would sure improve. :DL

Not to mention that I'm a big user now, and perfectly capable of backing up my own save game files if I choose to do so.
One time authentication and leave me alone, fine with me

Alot less griping would be present. I play DoW2, Dirt and Dirt2 - all of which use the "Live" system and allow offline play. Am totally cool with that.

This is the part that baffles me. Why reject it, especially given the industry experience out there with things like Steam? And why did they have to introduce it just before SH5 was released? :damn:

Would be the solution. I myself would have no problem with that DRM. Every thought of going for a job with Ubisoft, Hell with that Idea, I think You would have just increased the sales for SH5 enormously.

As everybody else that dont like the drm, yes one activation and an option to use the cloud and offline mode... thats a +1 for me. Cloud can be great but let me choose ;)
has anyone thought to find out if there is an offline mode? considering how long it took to find out that the campaign was dynamic, that dynamic shadows are in that it might actually exist already. worth asking I would of thought. they may even add it after all the complaints.

the Ubisoft People stated there was a need to be connected.
that means no offline.
I think I have stated it elsewhere. This is what the major issue is. I would have no problem with it if it emulated STEAM's approach.

I would have no problem with it if it emulated STEAM's approach.Indeed, i to stand in readiness to comply with such requsition, (Steam approach) one hopes this is maturely considered, and included. I shall be most concerned if UBI should be so circumstanced as not to be able to undertake the execution of it. This decision, (offline option) should be of first order.
