View Full Version : What can we possible expect for SH5 after release
1° SH5+DRM
2° Badly needed patch
3° ADDON (sub / campaign year / tech) & possibly no DRM
4° Another patch
5° NO DRM for sure
Now let me explain myself:
1° WeŽll get both, no matter what, perhaps a slightly modified drm but thats all, so we better stop whinning.
2° A mix of :DL & :damn:
3° After sales & interest in the game reachs a peak and seems to decline, weŽll get an addon and POSSIBLY no DRM to encourage potential gamers.
4° A full bag of :D I hope
5° If it was not included in the previous step, weŽll get it for sure as sales drops sharply, just to satisfy the community (and gather all those bread crumbs that fell out of the table)
And forget a SDK, that will not happen. In the end it will depend on modders

Seeing what modders have done to add playable surface ships in SH4, I'm very interested to see what they could do in SH5, if it's been opened up as much as the dev's are saying.

They are not going to drop the DRM. That's pretty clear.
Therefore, frankly? If this thing keeps spinning out of control and continues to go viral, we can expect SH5 to hit crush depth soon after it's released. And it will deserve it.

For me the tragedy will be if SH5 sinks for the reason the DRM stinks, irrespective of the game's quality.

Don't be so sure.

The following takes place betwen 12 pm and 11 am.
Events happen in real time:
12:00- 13:00: Excited posts from people who have bought it and are pleased
13:00-14:00: Confused posts from people who didn't RTFM
14:00 -15:00: Snotty posts from people who didn't buy the game to protect Truth, Justice and the American Way
15:00-16:00: Angry posts from people who did buy the game and object to the former
16:00-18:00: Snotty answers to questions from 13:00 from people who also didn't RTFM
18:00-19:00: First CTD and call for boycott
19:00-20:00: Posts explaining that CTD was because they were downloading 35 files from Rapidshare at the same
time so it may not be the games fault after all. Boycott temporarily halted.
20:00-21:00: First post saying they can't find the Type II or Type IX that the Devs promised. Pandemonium breaks out. Boycott resumes.
21:00-22:00: Europe weighs in with exuberant "first look" posts
22:00-23:00: Europe revises their opinions to "THIS GAME IS THE SUX0RS"
23:00-24:00: Dan weighs in with the news that there will be a patch. Several replies ask "Will it remove DRM?". No answer. More Pandemonium, but more reserved (North America is asleep by this time). Dan's body is never found.
24:00-1:00: First threat of a lawsuit.
1:00-2:00: Several posts state how much they are actually enjoying the game. Posters are rapidly beaten to death.
2:00-3:00: Internet Lawyer agrees to take the Class Action Suit as long as everyone sends $500 to his Nigerian Bank Account. Amazingly several people think this is a good idea.
3:00-4:00: Unexplained Subsim server outage (Neal need sleep, must have sleep)
4:00-5:00: Subsim server back up. Pandemonium reigns supreme. First poster asks where he can illegally download the game. A loud sobbing sound from direction of Texas drowns out response.
5:00-6:00: First Mod appears. Goofy looking guy in periscope is gone forever. Some cheering, more threats of Boycotts.
6:00-7:00: First post of the day asking if it's true you have to be connected to the internet to play. Neal and the Moderators just turn their computers off.
7:00-8:00: First report of being dropped out because of a lost internet connection. Internet Lawyer's head asplodes. Boycotters are now Boycotting the Boycott in favor of a much bigger Boycott.
8:00-9:00: Turns out that poster who lost the connection was playing on a 33K dial-up. Conversation rapidly changes to one about "Protecting our Freedom". RDP keeps asking "Will no one think of the CHILDREN", but he is largely ignored.
9:00-10:00: Channing logs on and starts lecturing people (in a most sarcastic manner) about how "in MY day we had to play computer games with Boot Discs and had to know to rewrite config files just to get them running". As soon as it is discovered that he hasn't bought SHV yet, he is beaten to death.
10:00-11:00: Three clear sides have now formed... one that likes the game, one that won't buy it on principle and one that bought it and can't figure out manual targeting. Everyone beats everyone else to death.
11:00-12:00: Silent Hunter VI announced. This is immediately followed by demands for certain features the were present in "Aces of the Deep" and subsequently dropped from every other game ever made, as well as demands for Screen Shots, Videos and Producer Notes. Last post on Subsim asks if anyone knows the release date.
Server melts
Lather, rinse, repeat.

The internet class-action of 'Every User v. Every Publisher'....

You could add a line about someone wanting to sue SubSim because they read a post in the 'Tips and Tactics' thread about "penetrating the screen" and promptly stuck something through their monitor....

If the DRM is present on release and sales fall way below expectations, it wouldn't suprise me if a patch cutting the reliance on DRM is released.

1954???
I think the targets get a little sparse after May 1945. :D
Of course there is the advantage of the slacking off of Anti-submarine patrols after 1945. :O:

Bwa haha, you made me spill my wine :haha::haha::haha:
Ubi will either look at this forum and cancell DRM (cheapest move)
Wait and see if wallets open or close. 2 people will buy SH5 --the choir will go Moooooo.
Ubi will try to recoup loses by dumping DRM/OSP.
The longer Ubi waits, the more customers they lose.
Internet Lawyer will he take paypal :stare:

Back on topic, think about it.
This DRM crap is to ensure they will get as much money as they can with the first wave of legal gamers. Of course scene crackers will put their hands on it as soon as is released, UBI knows that, but it may take some time though.
Eventually they will drop DRM to cut costs. Lets assume the fact this is not warcraft online after all, SH community is not as big as we (or they) would like. Of course, sometimes bigger is not better, but in the very end, it all comes down to.... money.

Another reason why we should question Ubi about what exactly they are offering as part of the game.
So long as you require their servers you are, in essence, entering a service contract with them i.e. I will pay for access (via purchasing the game) and you will provide the server required.
Having worked professionally in outsourced service environments, a few standard questions that would arise are:
- what capacity do your servers have?
- what level of service performance are you providing (i.e. what is total 'up time' performance, how regularly is maintenance conducted and for how long, what is your 'continuity of business' strategy in case of major failure?
- most significantly, what penalties apply to you (the provider) should you fail to meet the service level agreement?
If we don't know any of these things then we are absolute idiots to pay for a service where the service provider makes no enforceable undertakings.
"Here's my money. Now I pray fervently that you might provide the service I am assuming you will, given you've given me no details as to what that might be. Of course, if you don't, there's nothing I can do about it as I can't re-sell or return the game. You're not based in Nigeria by any chance, are you?"
How many of you will seriously sign up to such a thing? That's what you're being asked to do. If you will, then I certainly would never want you as my business partner.

Could be alleviated substantially if the moderators censored the words "told you so" now, in preparation, LOL.
