View Full Version : Now that the dust has settled....

So, as the dust settles on what has been a very busy few days, let's step back and look objectively at where we are.

Thankfully, the modding side of Silent Hunter 5 looks to be very exciting. I had thought that DRM would doom any modding of the game, but that apparantly is not the case. I hope Ubisoft has its technical act together on that issue.

The real issue, and the issue that inspired my 'Last Straw' post, remains though. That is the DRM. On a point of principle, I will not spend $50 on a game that I cannot play offline on my computer any time I choose to.

So, I guess the question becomes, will Ubisoft ever really consider offering a patch that allows Silent Hunter 5 to be played offline? I can't see why they would, having gone to all the trouble of setting up this nonsense in the first place.

So I guess that subsim and other similar forums are at a crossroads. Some of the members here will undoubtedly drift away, having decided not to buy the game. I'm sure we will be replaced by newbies though, who will scurry around the forum like excited new puppies.

If online DRM is the future, it's a future I want no part of. I'll watch with interest over the coming months though to see how all this plays out. :)

i'd imagine in a couple of years when they can't make anymore profit out of the game and no more addon's or DLC are in the pipeline a patch will be released to remove it which frees ubisoft's servers up from having to service all those users and that 24/7 connection!

Well, Ubisoft did remove all DRM from Prince of Persia because of problems they were having with the DRM back then. So it's not like there are no precedents here.

so the answer is we all phone them saying were having problems with it and they'll remove it! problem solved :DL

The core issue is OSP/DRM.
The fight against these systems started before we got invvolved. It is a fight bigger than us and we do make a difference. Ubi will lose sales. It may take them a while to realize we don't roll over like tame dogs.

Sinse the fight against DRM and the like is a matter of basic freedoms, the suits at Ubi will find themselves on the losing end.

they will do like the politicians do and just stop answering the phones, then say "we havent heard of any problems" because if you dont answer the phone you're telling the truth

My Plan:

1. When it is released read all the reviews to see if it is even CLOSE to a real simulator.:hmmm:

2. IF it is a good sim, I will wait months until the price hits close to bottom.:know:

3. I will buy it for cheap and store it away. DRM sux ballz you know.

4. When UBI drops DRM and releases a patch, BINGO! I play.

I know it might be hard to believe, but Ubisoft arn't stupid and won't
have their heads in the sand.
No doubt they are taking a step back to look at the situation they have
inadvertently caused.

The force of feeling here is strong enough to guarantee a resolution.

All we must do is make some noise, keep in rank, keep our wallets
closed and who knows, things might be back to normal before release.
