Well,
I'm out. It's truly heartbreaking, but I'm not going to participate in supporting another UBI disembowlment of another genre.
I've been dedicated to a few UBI titles until... they dumb them down to nothing more then console games and remove any remanace of what made them special. It is clearly obvious to me now, that trend has now hit the SH series as well.
I'm not some flakey, over emotional, wishy washy casual gamer blowing a bunch of steam around. I have a bookshelf full of U-Boat books and memorabilia, I've built a R/C U-Boat and played SH3 in real time with everything on manual. I work from home and enjoy being woken up at 3am to the sound of someone yelling 'ship spotted' in German.
UBI had it right with SH3, it was the direction we all wanted. We had the subs, we had the war, we had a dynamic campain. It was missing a few elements like resupply and whatnot, but it was there.
In my eyes, SH5 was to be a continuation of that direction with some additions. The announcement of the sub interiors was truely exciting!
But, as information has filtered out, and adding 2+2 here and there.... it has become clear that UBI didn't listen to anyone here at all. The community has been blindsided, and the Silent Hunter series future is now in jeapordy.
Are we getting a U-Boat simulator? No, we're getting a disjointed abomination of someones ill informed direction. I'm not going to waste my breath with listing the reasons, it's all there in black and white. It's glossed over, avoided and being sold, but it's clear what UBI intends to hand us.
So, to all... good luck with it. I'll stick to SH3 and thank this community for all the hard work put into the mods that have made that the best U-Boat sim I've ever played.
Maybe UBI will return to the direction they had with the SH series in the future, but my experience knows better.
