If I sink an unlit ship which is flying the flag of Norway in October 1939 (they become Allies in Sept. 1940), am I penalized? At what point do I know something is wrong - not until after the mission is over and I'm back in port?

Thanks!

Same as the stock game - you will lose the same renown you would have won had the ship been an enemy. If it's worth 230 renown, that's how much you will lose.

Bad thing is you will have everyone in the world trying to kill you. :arrgh!:

I almost sunk the Norwegian ship, but just as I was about to fire the torpedo I was able to *just barely* make out the flag (this was around midnight). I'd been tracking the ship four 4 hours (game time) and set up a perfect 90-degree shot, had the unlit ship coming to zero degrees gyro when I just spotted the faint cross and then saw some color and the whole crew let out a sigh of disappointment.

So why are they running without lights? They're *asking* to be sunk! :arrgh!:

The same ship 11 months later would be fair game, but I assume the "Flaggen" tool in GWX has accurate dates for neutrality and allegiance.

Oh well. At least I didn't fire. Door was open, finger on the trigger, straining to see the flag before he came to zero degrees on the gyro.

What a ride though!

This brings a question to my mind.

If the neutral ship is unlit and in a convoy. Is it still a neutral that cost renown against you or is fair game.

I'm thinking if a neutral ship is lit in a convoy, then it is neutral. But if the ship is unlit in a convoy than it is the enemy and deserves to be sunk.

I forgot about the 'enemy' part. Yes, if you sink a neutral (or friendly), that nation considers you an enemy for 24 hours.

So why are they running without lights? They're *asking* to be sunk! :arrgh!:
Because in the stock game there were no lighted ships at all. They were created for a mod and ended up in GWX, so some are lighted and some are not, just like real life.

The same ship 11 months later would be fair game, but I assume the "Flaggen" tool in GWX has accurate dates for neutrality and allegiance.
That's absolutely correct.

Oh well. At least I didn't fire. Door was open, finger on the trigger, straining to see the flag before he came to zero degrees on the gyro.

I know that feeling well, and yes it is quite the experience.:sunny:

I sank a panamean tanker in convoy, unlit, bad visibility in feb 1941. negative renown ( patrol renown was around only 100pts ...) but i can live with it and think i was right to do that

in my current career an US-vessel was hit by me in spring 1941.
had very foggy sight and guns at stern and midships were enough for me to consider her "enemy". I then recognized my big mistake and hurried away. she had probably sunk but I was out of range already!
pheewww that was close

With GWX 3,0 I attacked a convoy early in war sailing near british coast. I scored two hits on a large cargo which sinked of course. All ships were darkened and escorted. When I returned to base in my horror I noticed that had sinked some 7000 tons of neutral shipping. It was only ship I had sunked during patrol. Anyway got positive renown for it.

Happened to me only once.
Any similar incidents?

You got positive renown for sinking the unlit neutral ships within a convoy? Or your net renown for the patrol was positive?

And I think this answers my question - you may not know whether what you sunk was neutral until you get back to port, right?

And thirdly, neutral ships escorted by Allied ships in a convoy are still neutral?

If you sink a hospital ship in GWX your career will end and you will be shot when you return to base. No kidding.

During that patrol I sinked only one ship which was neutral. I got positive renown.

Or pressing Esc

And thirdly, neutral ships escorted by Allied ships in a convoy are still neutral?

After docking to port final scores showed it neutral.

It was about year ago. But I'm pretty sure I remember the situation correctly. I wasn't looking any flags because it was radio reported enemy convoy.
Be more agressive they say.

Time to cut wings from this rumour.

I sinked following ships:

Large Cargo 7441 tons
Modern Tanker 8816 tons (Neutral, sailing in enemy convoy)
Modern Tanker 8814 tons
Large Merchant 11 041 tons (to BillCar: hit from 3800m, confirmed, give or take some 10m. Doesn't beat your 4000m but close enough)
Whale Factory Ship 12 016
Coastal Freighter 1870
Empire-type Freighter 7401
S-class Submarine 767

Hull Integrity 94,69%
Total renown: 1510

Now if someone would tell me how to count renown in GWX3 so I can get this over with.

Or even better. Do the math for me so I can concentrate on my friday night patrolling:arrgh!:

Look in the file Ubisoft/Silent Hunter III/Data/Cfg/Basic. You will see the exact renown applications.

Enemy: +1
Neutral: -1
Friendly: -10

Not a rumor at all. Doesn't matter if they are lit or not. Doesn't matter if they are escorted or not. If you sank a bunch of enemy ships and one or two neutrals, of course your overal score will be positive.
