View Full Version : Attitude towards SHV

Sorry for this rant, however I can't believe the attitude towards this new game. It seems to happen everytime a new version of silent hunter is released.
Yes I can understand the issues with the 'always connected to the internet to play' however this is the future. Also there are alternatives for people with no internet connection such as pay as you go broadband. Yes you will have to spend some money, but it will be worth it.
I just think we should be glad there is another installment to the only current half decent Uboat sim. :damn:

I agree. Allthough i have questionsmarks regarding certain features in sh-5 , i feel you should give it a chance. People just tend to see the negative things before the positive. I must however also add that ubi itself is to blame for this. I mean the game should be out in little more then a month , yet most features are still vague to say at leasts. People just dont know what to expect and this tends to make people a little nervous i guess.
People just dont know what to expect
:shifty: I recon most of us have a pritty good idea by now.
I respectfully disagree.
It's not just the online requirement for me but also the idea that my savegames will be stored online and the whole scheme that I need such an account at all to play an offline, single-player game. I have no problems with a one-time online authentication but the idea of having to manage my games through online accounts doesn't appeal to me at all. Especially since this is THE direct path to pay-to-play, with soon to come "premium" accounts, followed by monthly fees if you want to play at all. Steam in this regard gets a special treatment from me because I appreciate their digital delivery idea which is a service I actually benefit from and I like them as publishing platform for indie games.
In the end the DRM fiasco was just the drop that spilled the barrel for me. I was already disappointed with the campaign ending in '43 , only the type VII playable, and I still don't know if I will like the campaign system.
I don't have to accept everything a publisher throws at me. If I'm not happy with a product I don't buy it. There are other games I'll enjoy instead. I started playing subsims with Silent Service I, but SH5 at the moment simply doesn't appeal to me anymore.

You do? You know for example how the campaign will be? Do you know how the game plays and feels once you have it on your pc? No you dont. You can only know when you play the game yourself. I,m just saying if you think it nolonger apeals to you then don,t buy it. But dont let me catch you posting on the forum finding out you bought the game afterall!

I'm going to hold my current opinion on SHV unless my post on "features from Aces and SHI that has since disappeared" is vaporized and rendered Unpost. If Ubi can't get their act together and give us a sim with more than one boat, a campaign that spans the entire war, and bring back some of the functionality included in a 15-year old game, I'm not gonna be a happy guy in the near future.

quite to the contrary, rural areas are very much dial up only or in places like the plain states where its purely satelite only and when it rains or you have a problem you can be SOL for a while
my sister just moved from wyoming where they had trouble all the time with the satelite service and were told the had to wiat till they got a newer satelite (the one orbiting in space!) now thats customer service :O: they had dish tv and there was NO other service available period, it was dish tv or learn knitting
big cities and well populated areas are well covered but any area where its what i call country living or spread out with open spaces around you have issues with things like broad band and high speed internet service

I was going to purchase SH 5 to support the franchise and hope a SH 6 would go back to the PTO since Im a Fleetboat guy, but if I have to go online to play single player and store my game online etc, I will just stick with the excellently modded SH 4.That is just pure crap from UBI.

what i find the most confusing is they took a game with a loyal fan base but not huge sales potential and basicly just told a good 40-60% of those customers they are getting a game they will find has been made undesirable if not unacceptable to them
I had a positive attitude toward SH5 the whole time. But going online to play a single player game is a no go from me.

If my mind wasn't made up before, it definatly is now. Makes me wonder if i should start working on the uboat section of SH4 for TMO. Before, I didn't touch it because i didn't have the time. Then i didn't touch it because i figured with GWX 4 coming, working on uboats was pointless. They'd have it well covered, no point in wasting my time. Then i figured, with SH5 coming, working on uboats was REALLY pointless. Now im back to wondering where i'd find the time. :shifty:
(sorry Dan, i don't mean to make ripples in the pond, but really man, who's making some of these decisions with SH5?)

I expect it will work like "Rise of Flight" where you give an ID and password to complete the start-up. It takes about five seconds and that's it. The good side to that is you can install the game anywhere and many times, but unless one knows the user account, it will not start.
Or it may be like Jutland, where you get a license that allows only one installation to work at a time. The game will validate without your input needed after that. If you want to move the game to another system, you press CTRL - F12 and the user ID and password are shown, then selecting OK releases the license so you can use it for the new install.
Both these are painless methods that I'd prefer to not need, but it does prevent multiple use of one product. :arrgh!:

Some people simply don't have any choice I'm afraid.
Personally speaking, I'm in the process of upgrading my 20MB connection to 50MB but the days of dial up are still fresh in my memory banks.
I reckon you'd be suprised (and looking at Websters post I'd say he pretty much confirms the fact) how many areas in the western hemisphere still lag behind Broadband etc.

People that have a good connection play WoW anyway, or are running around online with M-16s and Desert Eagles in their Virtual Hands.
They wanna sel a Sub game to these people?
LOL!
might just as well quit the job right now - serious SIMmers dont do that kind of online "running around shootn stuff", and there are a lot of us.
Even if the big Publishers go console market only, i wont buy their crap no mo'

Until a few years ago DSL was not available in my area.

Which portion of posters are you referring to?
It is true there have been some posters who have gotten a little emotional but they are the minority. There is a far larger portion of the posters who are calmly posting their opinions based on what Ubi has chosen to release.
The Emo posters need to be ignored. But the other posters are bringing up legitimate concerns.
That is the entire purpose of websites like this. To allow people who could not normally exchange opinions, to do so. I just don't see the problem.

Well...I live in the capital city of my country. My house is less than 10 years old, yet I am limited to 1500/256k ADSL, capped at 40GB d/l (shaped thereafter). I, like most Australians, am a victim of the Telstra infastructure monopoly (and they are not even my ISP).
And the cost for this luxury? AU$70 per month!
And I consider myself lucky. Some of my friends that live up the road were on dialup until 12 months ago!
And I'm willing to bet that there's many people reading this that wish they had what I have.
It's very funny reading posts from (mainly) Americans saying that if you have slow internet then you must be living in the sticks, thus don't deserve to play SH5. Get a dose of reality guys - there's a big wide world beyond your shores. ;)

Ducimus, remember to try out the latest OM+OMEGU... :haha: It's not about the pacific anymore.
Ubi might get a few thousand more sells initially, but if they lose 30-40 talented modders, they'll be in a world of hurt. Just think how much the SH3 community has OLC to thank about. But he never switched to SH4 and you can see the results.

Remember when your parents would tell you that the anticipation is always better than the reward? :hmmm:
What does it mean when anticipation is slowly, over the course of months, whittled away en masse to pure apprehension. What do you do then?
I won't lie, I'm sure I'm going to get the game (use of game, not sim, intended), but I just wish I was going to do it with some serious excitement as opposed to having second thoughts all the way to the counter.
I want to be using one of these  right now.
But what I'm feeling more and more with everything we learn is this:cry:
Maybe iv been out of the loop, but do you guys have a link the source where it states you need internet connection....bad move from Ubisoft!

Unfortunately the most user will just buy the product. So UBI does not care about their DRM. So the users think. Damn it i want this game, i'll buy it sooner or later.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I'd gladly take internet authentication over having to put my disk in every time I want to play.
The chances of the UBI servers ceasing to exist are probably about the same as you damaging your disk.
And even if at some point in the murky distant future when everyone else is running around a holodeck generated Silent Hunter 15 and you want to dig out your old copy of SH5 I'm sure there will be sufficient hacks to get it working.

Its not that you just need authentication. You must be online 100% all the time when playing the game OFFLINE! If not you cannot play the game.

Also there are alternatives for people with no internet connection such as pay as you go broadband.
How does it work? And how much does it cost. If I can't connect my computer to the internet at all, how do I get this pay-as-you-go broadband?
Yes you will have to spend some money, but it will be worth it.
Really? Worth how much? The reason I can't connect to the internet is that I can't afford it. How is it worth it to not be able to afford an alternative?

Jimbuna is absolutely right. But not just in the Western Hemisphere. If you want Internet in MANY places outside major cities, Satellite is your best if not only option...Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Pacific Rim, etc. Anyone who has had satellite internet knows how spotty it is.
Why do some people talk about this like EVERYONE has access to a high-speed DSL or cable option?
(I think many of my fellow Americans need to get their passport stamped and go see some of the world outside their hometown. BTW, leave your CDMA phones at home while your at it!)
