View Full Version : Trouble staying logged in

I've run across a snag lately, not a major issue but still one I thought I should bring up.

I can't stay logged in. I will refresh the main forums index (because I always hang around:D) and I will suddenly be logged out, and every time I log back in, I tick the Remember Me checkbox and it still happens. I have made no changes to my browser, which is Firefox. in the past 5 days, when I loaded an update, this started happening yesterday.

I think the amount of time a user stays logged in without activity has been reduced. Probably to alleviate the downtime issues. :hmmm:

sounds believable. I wonder what Neal would have to say about it though:hmmm:

I haven't noticed it on my home PC, that's the only one I've checked the "remember me" option on. I assumed when it happened on other computers *cough the office cough* it was because I didn't check that option there and logging people out if they were inactive for a while reduced the strain on the system, which is fine.

I'll leave the window up at home for a bit when I'm tending to some other things and see if it logs me out here too.

But, if it needs to be done to help things run more smoothly, it's not that big a deal, especially since my username/password get filled in automatically. It's just an extra click and then at least it takes me back to wherever I was or was going within the forums anyway.

Everyone seeing this on FF 3.6?

I'm using IE7, and staying logged in... but yeah, this could be an effect of the shortened cycle.

IE 8 on the PC where I've noticed it.

Firefox 3.5.7 here, no problems. However, I do remember that I have had this problem in the past, maybe a year - year and a half ago I had this issue with Firefox. But then it went away, dont know what I did to solve it. :hmmm:

Well, now that we need your expertise, you fall short!:arrgh!:

Here's what they tell me:

Close all browser windows/tabs except for one.

Logout of your site.

Close the final browser window.

Delete the cookies for your site.

Log back in.

This issue only occurs if you have cookie corruption and the new one fails to overwrite the old one. You can cause this simply by having a site open in two windows/tabs at the same time and closing a tab with the old cookies after one with the new cookies. It predominantly happens in browsers that store cookie information in memory, as is all of them that have a Private Browsing feature.

Let me try a couple things before you go to that trouble.

I've made some changes, so far vBulletin tech support has not been a lot of help.

If you are finding yourself logged out repeatedly, feel free to post here and include what browser and version, thanks.

I'm noticing this too. Seeing it both in the subscribed threads list in the CP as well as when just clicking on different forums/subforums.

IE8 if that makes any difference.

vBulletin MessageSlow Down! You are trying to download files too quickly. You must wait 4 seconds before you may download another file.

I haven't been logged out but I have been getting this. New post notifications in threads that don't have any new posts.

Browser: Google Chrome 4.0.249.78

still no change.
maybe I'll update first to FF3.7 to see if it's browser-related.

It started for you today, Steve?

Sailor Steve

:yep: Just today. It seemed coupled with the 'Database Error' problem. I would post, get that message, go back in and try to post only to find I was logged out.

Happened two or three times, but seems okay now.

Oah, nos... Im gettin logged out again... I dont know if you shortened the time to log out if no activity, but its around 30 mins now (ex just has a battle in etw, which lasted about 30 mins, then came back to take a look, and I was logged out.)

Was useing IE 8...

Yeah, it probably is something to do with activity. Previous it was set for 1 hour, now it has been shortened to reduce resource use.

High chaps annoyingly I wrote 2 long reports to Zeewolf regarding testing his patch v1-2B and when I submitted (twice) someone ate it!!!!!
It may be a time out problem but if not sorted I won't be able to participate. Nothing has changed as far as I am concerned but would be grateful to have it sorted. Only started happening a couple of days ago.
Best Regards Mort going quickly before this gets eaten too!!!

Hello all I'm sure it was a time out problem previously as I wrote a long screed and was unaware of this particular restriction. hence got the chop as I submitted my small Bible!
All OK now as what I do is write it up first then copy and paste it in.
Too stupid to think of it before DOH!
Thanks for putting up with me being a Dork
:D Mort

It's doing it to me again. I spent a good ten minutes replying to a PM, and when I hit 'Submit' it took me to the "You Must Be Logged In" screen. When I went back the message was lost.

I took a break and tried again. This time I saved it before submitting, and sure enough it kicked me out again. I logged back in again and pasted the message, and that time it sent it properly.

Frustrating, to say the least.:damn:

And now it's logged me out four times in one session. Getting frustrating.

Sometimes it happens to me too.
Can't detect any pattern in it.
For today, I haven't noticed it (yet).

[EDIT]
It just happened to me while typing a larger message
