Some interesting stuff to learn from:
1. No wonder nobody ever raided Gibraltar
2. Especially when you run onto (!) a naval net next to a stack of anchored light cruisers, therefore forced to surface
3. Settling down on the seafloor at 200m for repairs and flooding recovery could work, but the surface guys can still hear ye'
4. And they eventually (1 hours later) manage to hit you with enough charges that the hull can't take the pressure at 200m any more.
Men down on the deck! Mediiiiiiiic! U-boat destroyed by pressure.

Hard luck mate. DID can be a pain at times. I'm thinking of avoiding Gibraltar in my current campaign due to the high presence of things that can murder me.

I'm ordered to DJ21 which makes me uneasy at all.
BdU is surely expecting me to attack convoys in that area and I will obey to orders. but I've already decided that I'll stay submerged during the day and will only surface at night. if wheather is bad only batteries will be charged twice a day otherwise I'll stay down.
it's the only way to evade the massive air-cover, imho.
(call me chicken-hearted! :D )

Gibralter is a fun place to play, not the port though that place is scary. But there is nothing like hunting and being hunted at the same time in shalow water.
If you find your self snaged in one of those pesky nets again you could always try simply backing up. It dosen't work all the time but some times you can avoid having to pop up.

You tried port raiding in a IX?
How can a sea cow expect itself to be neglected by others...

Used a IXB for a round trip into The Med, and back out.
That was crazy enough.
But, INTO Gibralter?!
That's nuts!
(I don't even have the guts in SH3, to try what Prien did, for real.
That's one brave man.)

I just tried it on a first combat patrol (2nd overall) of a new career in which I was testing out some mod combos as I'd been having n00b issues with using them. Okay, I didn't try sneaking into SF proper, just tried cruising by there at very close range to see what the RN was up to, because I'd just spent I don't know how long in grid BF-something with precious little excitement.
Was sneaking by with decks awash in the black of night and doing just fine until I decided to fire a torpedo at a destroyer. Oh well, it was just a "test career," lol.
Altho my escapade did result in the loss of 3 of their ships total. The one that I hit went down almost instantly. Then I was trying to dodge constant depth charges and taking major damage in 60-70 m of water for a while with three more of them zeroed in on my position. Given the damage estimates, we weren't going to get flooding under control before they blew us to pieces with more depth charges. So I figured WTH and waited until the RN was at least moving away and came up fast - better to die on the surface, IMO.
Ping ping ping, and had two destroyers making right for me as we emerged, and I'm not sure what exactly happened but when I switched to external view it looked like one of them had run right into or over our stern and the other had in turn rammed her from behind. Or maybe they dropped depth charges and then couldn't get away fast enough because I surfaced right into their path.
Anyway, we took 'em both down with us. :O:

Brave Kaleun. Dead crew.
When I'm feeling brave I head for the Irish Sea, which isn't all that bright, especialy for a IXaholic. It's easier from AM53 than from the South. Elcos! I hate Elcos!

I recall my first vanilla SH3 career...when I got my type VIIB, I got a wild hair and attacked the southwest corner of england...I sank one DD making 20kts west out of the channel then downed TWO elcos (not at the same time) with my deck gun in fierce firefights before trying to breach portland and running headfirst into a subnet LOL :damn:

scapa flow aint that hard, i used to sneak through just to see if there is any juicy targets in there, befor i realised that there rarley is. :shifty:
however gibraltar is a little harder. as already said, stay under water, maybe snorkel during night, and always silent running, ahead slow. now i haven't gone in to the harbour itself, as i guess there would be nothing really worth it. however Valetta after the italian surrender is :woot: INterned battleships for the win!

Scapa is pretty fun, if you arrive at the right time (by night that is).
There's ALWAYS a Fiji light cruiser stationed, aswell as a troopship and and some anchored destroyers.
Sunk the King whatshisname V there once, was anchored around februari 1942.

that would be the KGV, King George V, and is a real feat!!!!
The troopship is usually in the dock at the extreme NE and has at LEAST one subnet between you and it...I've been able to score hits with min depth torpedoes, but troopships are tough. I've also found large tankers hidden back in there.
The problem is that they're way in, the shore batteries in GWX3 are NASTY and there's usually about five destroyers lurking in the lagoon

yeah, its not worth sneaking all the way in just to bag a few troopships. those can be found out at the ocean too, and are not as nestled in...
Scapa Flow is easy to inflirtrate.
You need:
1.Patience.
2.More patience.
3.Moonless Night.
4.Early war times .14 October 1939 is fine, 5 days earlier you can find Hood and Nelson
5.Optional Torpedos if you are in the mood to atack.
Sneak in to eastern Scapa passage (Kirk Sound)on surface by night, swim between wrecks. Voila!
DD`s do not see you if you are carefull...
Optional search for Revenge Class BB , shoot salvo of 3 eels and run for your life...
you not survive this if you still be on surface, so you must shoot that salvo underwater, and then swim on silent running close to the coast from there to exit.
Not really like Prien but still fun.
The End
Played on GWX3
