So I've been playing a bit of SHIV, restarted the campaign a few times for various reasons. I hear a lot of people getting into fun encounters and two sided face off of epic proportions.

Are these what you can expect to encounter during the patrol missions? (How many different type of mission are there anyhow or are they pretty much all go patrol? I did have one to drop of a spy but was just the one). Should I be expected to look out for radio reports (I forget the name of the signal or transmission type they call it, xpac or something similar maybe) and go after hunting down big juicy targets and having some ww2 battles knowledge to know where the big guns will be hanging around, coupled with a historical accuracy mod?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks

I assume you're playing stock. The campaign layers of stock are fairly done, but much better with a mod like RSRD as far as historical convoys, the actual battles, ect. Mod's totally change the game up, so when you go that way, just read carefully.

You'll get in game plenty of Flash Messages from base. Some tell you where ships are, ect. You're given a patrol zone, once you complete the patrol, you can send status reports and they'll give you another patrol zone. Sometimes I do the patrols, sometimes I prefer to hunt other places or partake in large battles, but to a degree you need to complete at least one patrol.

DIfferent missions, you'll get spy insertions, supply dropoffs, photo recons, saving pilots, ect...Each will cause more questions..

If you haven't yet, read the SHIV guide. It explains how to complete most missions.

My approach to a campaign. I start out of Manila and go for the invasion forces. Course you lose that base soon and head down south. I then hang around Java for the many large 50 ship invasion groups, time it right with one refit at Surabaya and you can fight 3 large convoys. I then move to Brisbane ASAP and fight a year around the Solomon's...Battle of Coral Sea, ect.. Then it's attacking large convoys in the Bismark Sea. I try to partake in every large Battle. Late war I live for Formosa. It's about suicide fighting there, but fun.

They're are some epic battles and convoys. Course I use TMO and RSRD mods and had a blast fighting a 30 ship convoy in Formosa. It was a bad storm, dark, so I went in firing tubes and guns by radar. DD's with radar chasing my stern the whole time and I weaved like Ali in between numerous ships. Was a blast.

We have a thread on Convoys here. I show a lot of where I find them and some of the major battles. Others have added, but if you want a fun realistic game that ain't so easy, load TMO 1.9 and RSRD mods to start...if you have ver 1.5

Thanks a lot Armistad, just the sort of info I've been looking for

I'll have to try and remember where it's all kicking off and when. I didn't realize that after completing a patrol you could send a status report to get a new zone.

Thanks for the time
