I notice that icebergs are in the roster, but i've never seen one in-game.
I've heard a bit about them but never got a straigh yes/no answer.
Thanks :)

There are icebergs in the sim, but only a small token number so they're hard to find. If the game tried to load as many bergs as there are really out there in the Arctic, it would crash most systems.

Yeh, you'd need a real 'Titanic' rig...

Hur hur hurr...

There are indeed icebergs and sometimes you can see the whales swimming around them....in SH3 GWX.

in the single missions (GWX) there is at least one with a lot of ice in it. :D

Oh i saw a couple of icebergs allready (why did u call them icebergs? if i took the german word Eisberg the exact translation must be something like icemountain) but i never saw whales arround (GWX 3Gold ofc).
I hear them at the hydrophone but never saw some.

When patrolling way up north I have seen a few. Funny thing is they tend to come up on the hydrophones as a very slow moving vessel like 1-2knots. Before I realized what they were I would intercept these contacts and find myself face to face with an ice mountain. Weird. Also, via the hydrophones I will hear "biologicals" very near these bergs. Whales I suppose....:hmmm:

Now, see... folks on your end of the spectrum have had that experience with this sim. I'm always too busy trying (and mostly faltering) to rack up tonnage. Should I stop to smell the roses once in awhile? :hmmm:

The iceberg thing is a myth and let the truth now be known that it was indeed a German sub that sent her to the bottom. :yep::yep:

Ah! Thanks for the wiki link, that makes sense now.... the word "berg" came from the Dutch.

Does anyone know if one can safely dive below them?

It's something I always wondered, but afraid to "seek the truth" about.

Not sure if it's the lame difficulty settings I have in place when I play SH3 (I'm at a whopping 3%), but I can still use my periscope when submerged below periscope depth. *shrug* Dunno. Do higher difficulty settings cause seal blowouts at depths much greater than periscope depth (as in DW)?

If not, then by all means raise that periscope when you dive to the great dark depths of the sea and observe the icebergs as you majestically careen off of their underwater projections (or not... you most probably are a much better skipper than I). :DL

On a sidenote, I love DW's High Frequency sonar at the 'scope.

Of course you can. Just try it.....:DL......Just remember, there is much more ice under the water than above. Being from the North you would know that, wouldn't you.....?

Ja, unfortunately.
Just had to ask because hitting one while submerged has unpleasantly crossed my mind.
This time I was kind-of hoping SH3 messed up.
But no, I'm not brave enough to try it deliberately.

The real question is how much tonnage do you get for sinking one?

8 torpedos and 200 deckgun rounds didn't even dent one

IIRC they're moddeled as environmentals and therefore indestructible, just like the dolphins and whales.

Thought that its impossible to moddel something as enviromental and add course, name and make it possible to indentify it at the same time...

lol you wont sink one
They have no damage model

When the game was released ( and after patching ) the Icebergs never worked - that is they never moved

After various attempts and ways of trying I think was Rubini who did it that way
Classifying them as a ship not only got them going but also meant your crew gave you an audible warning they were there so you didnt plough into one and if submerged you could hear them and save a crash also

Without checking the links I guess you mean the one the British were gonna make
:rotfl2:

They did actually build one ship out of ice - well ice and sawdust IIRC
At the bottom of a sound somewhere in Canada

I had a look under some of these with the free Camera, and they don't seem to be big enough underneath the surface. I thought it was 20/80 but in game look about 50/50.

Jimbuna

In RL 1/8 or 12.5% of an iceberg shows above the water surface.

In game the percentages are almost reversed.

There really isn't much point in modelling something if you can't see the majority of said model.

Haha that made me laugh, how patient of you taking the time to fire 200 shells at an iceberg.
You probably will have some explaining to do when you get back to port about the whereabouts of your ammo :P

My first encounter with icebergs disappointed me. The hydrophone picked them up first as 3 slow merchants.
My patrol had been dry so far, so i went for it.
As i got closer the map named them (Iceberg 1, Iceberg 2 and Iceberg 3).
To be honest, i thought those were ship names (thought even the might be icebreakers) since i never expected icebergs to be shown on hydrophone or named on the map in the same way as ships.

They are initially identified as slow moving craft because their drift speed is 5 knots IIRC but the name changes to iceberg (which is what they are) as soon as they move into visual range and you are able to make a positive id.
