View Full Version : November 22, 1941 A Big Day for U-75

Patroling South of Malta had been pretty dissapointing when in the early morning of Nov 22, 1941 I got a radio intercept. I turned the U-75 (a type VII B) toward the boogie and was soon rewarded with the sighting of a small Freighter.

It was too choppy to take him on with my deck gun, but our possition was perfect for a submerged attack. As we slipped below the surface two things happen almost simulatiously - I got another sound contact of another transport and I heard a bomb exposion. Going to external veiw I saw a bomb fall into the water just shy of my targeted freighter. Italian bombers!

The bombers did not sink her, although she was smoking and had slowed by the time she met my cross-hairs and a large torpedo.

As I reloaded my torpedo tube I continued to track the other contact. With little manuvering required another small transport enters the scene and a single torpedo sends her down. We surfaced and headed South.

As we moved South we got a visual of a destroyer moving East to West. Periscope Depth. The destroyer was moving at 14 knots and looked like she was on the move and not patrolling, searching or zizagging. I think I'll try to bag her. I slowed my speed down and got flooded with a bunch of sound contacts of warships moving east to west right in front of me.

Holy Cow! 6 destroyers, 2 AA Light Cruisers, and 3 battleships come into sight. In the lead of the battleship column was the King George V followed by 2 Rodney class battlewagons. Unbelievable! Beautifull! The King George V will be in a perfect shot possition in just a few minutes at a range of 3,000 meters. I set the bow torpedos to 6 meters and flood tubes 1 thru 4. My hands were trembling as I order the torpedos fire one after another.

The torpedos streaked away, barely miss an escort (wouldn't that have been a bummer), one preemies but the King George V continues on course and then:

And the King George V slides to a halt

The two Rodney's had to manuever violently to avoid a collission

The destroyers were so concerned about the two moving battleships that they just kept on moving a speed, leaving only one escort to look for me. He did this half-heartedly and for only a short period and then he took off to join the rest of the formation, long gone to the West.

Two hours later I put two more torpedos into the King George V (I'm getting credit for this sinking!) and down she went

With few torpedos left we headed toward Salamis and encountered a lone Large Transport a few days later and sent her down.

Torpedos depleted it was time to head home and reap my reward

And for all that, BDU saw fit to give me a handshake and an Atta-boy!
Where is the justice?:hmmm:

Those 2 Rodneys would be the HMS Rodney and the HMS Nelson. I bagged Nelson on my first patrol. Great work on nailing George.

Cool pics too! How do you retrieve still shots?

I've got several, one of the Bismark.

Your advice would be welcome.

Everyone knows the Itallian's can't aim worth a damn, they were probly knew our fine Krauline was in the area and wanted to alert him to the fine opertunity. :O:

I wish I had this much luck in my currant patrol. So far I have only been bombed three times, fortunatly the Tommies are worse in the aiming department than the Italians. Anyone know where the enemy is in '44? Seems like the up and left the Atlanitc.

If you're driving a Type VIIB/C, and you're REALY brave, go to AM53.

If you're driving a Type IXB/C, BC43 (near Canada) works well.

Rockall Bank is also worth a try.

A really productive spot is approx 200km west of Gib.

Look in for example > C\ program files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter III.

Then look near bottom of page for icon that looks like a piece of paper with a paintbrush laying on it.

Click it. Those are your ingame pics.

History recalls the British battleships Rodney and King George V intercepted Bismark on May 27th. It doesn't record they were sunk by U129 - an IXB with six eels aboard.

Knowing the approximate historical location and course set by the two pursuing battleships enabled U 129 to position itself in their path at the right time.

On the morning of the 27th in force 15 seas, fast approaching screws were detected. The boat surfaced to make a flank speed dash towards the British projected course line. The boat's course was then set at flank submerged speed parallel to that of the British. Luckily, it managed to position its remaining torpedoes within relatively short range.

Target speed was confirmed. One after tube was first emptied. Then two forward eels more and Rodney slowed to a crawl after taking one hit towards the bow and one midships. Within less than two minutes the King George zigged towards its doom... lucky for U129! Our crew thrilled to hear three dull booms vibrate the hull of our boat. Soon after the King George slipped beneath the waves, her accomplice followed her.

Pictures of this event were taken using the F11 button. Alas, could someone help by explaining how to recover and share them?

If anyone's interested, the story does not end here. The Bismark, disabled by heavy crusiers Norfolk and Dorsetshire, was then located and accompanied by U129. In SH3 (GWX) the Bismark floated on to meet her next target, a convoy scheduled by the game designers to appear one and one half days later! What a scene to remember!

Come now, Mr. Jim. You can surely move farther up the bottle-neck than that.
