Patroling South of Malta had been pretty dissapointing when in the early morning of Nov 22, 1941 I got a radio intercept. I turned the U-75 (a type VII B) toward the boogie and was soon rewarded with the sighting of a small Freighter.
It was too choppy to take him on with my deck gun, but our possition was perfect for a submerged attack. As we slipped below the surface two things happen almost simulatiously - I got another sound contact of another transport and I heard a bomb exposion. Going to external veiw I saw a bomb fall into the water just shy of my targeted freighter. Italian bombers!

The bombers did not sink her, although she was smoking and had slowed by the time she met my cross-hairs and a large torpedo.
As I reloaded my torpedo tube I continued to track the other contact. With little manuvering required another small transport enters the scene and a single torpedo sends her down. We surfaced and headed South.
As we moved South we got a visual of a destroyer moving East to West. Periscope Depth. The destroyer was moving at 14 knots and looked like she was on the move and not patrolling, searching or zizagging. I think I'll try to bag her. I slowed my speed down and got flooded with a bunch of sound contacts of warships moving east to west right in front of me.
Holy Cow! 6 destroyers, 2 AA Light Cruisers, and 3 battleships come into sight. In the lead of the battleship column was the King George V followed by 2 Rodney class battlewagons. Unbelievable! Beautifull! The King George V will be in a perfect shot possition in just a few minutes at a range of 3,000 meters. I set the bow torpedos to 6 meters and flood tubes 1 thru 4. My hands were trembling as I order the torpedos fire one after another.
The torpedos streaked away, barely miss an escort (wouldn't that have been a bummer), one preemies but the King George V continues on course and then:

The two Rodney's had to manuever violently to avoid a collission

The destroyers were so concerned about the two moving battleships that they just kept on moving a speed, leaving only one escort to look for me. He did this half-heartedly and for only a short period and then he took off to join the rest of the formation, long gone to the West.
Two hours later I put two more torpedos into the King George V (I'm getting credit for this sinking!) and down she went

With few torpedos left we headed toward Salamis and encountered a lone Large Transport a few days later and sent her down.

Torpedos depleted it was time to head home and reap my reward
