View Full Version : Who Is The Enemy?
Today, the hysterical bad mouthing and pseudo thinking has reached the point of utter ridiculusness with these words:
Finally... UBISOFT "Suits" ARE Your ENEMY. :arrgh!:
This reminds me of one of our moderators telling a newbie: There are no stupid questions but we do get a lot of stupid answers.
Lately we've had a flood of people shooting their mouths without engaging brains or babbling off complains over something they have never seen.
Most ridiculous of all is attacking UBI.
Remember Silent Hunter (The original)?
The compay that published it (SSI?) went broke while producing SH2.
UBI picked up the unfinished SH2, finished it and we played it.
In the last ten years UBI has faithfully produced The rest of the SH series.
Without UBI suits, DEVS and higher management, our only subsim game available would be Silent Hunter-00
Think hard before you write something that will make you look stupid on this forum.
Yes, I wonder if these 'UBI suits' actually exist or weather they are a just creation from our own imagination(s). :hmmm:.
They are metaphore at the very least.
I think its plain and simple, UBi$oft = big evil corporate establishment and an easy punch bag for that reason.
Its the same on EAs forums, or Actvision or Take 2 or just about any successful games developer/publisher you can think of.
Musicians get it too..."oh you signed up to a big lable, you dont care about your fans and you $old out - you $uck and we hate you etc"
Nobody ever defends big Corperations because they are seen as evil cigar chomping profiteering exploitative fat cats.
Yet sometimes the same people will defend & support Captialism regliously in a polictical debate, talk about confused
Oh I dont know...

People can't come to terms with what are clearly design choices (may or may not be motivated by deadlines), but they don't want to bitch on the devs so the anonymous Mister Ubi takes all the **** :D

And the benefit is, the term "Ubisoft" in this case can refer, interchangably, to either the devs (Ubisoft Romania) or the publisher (Ubisoft Entertainment). Double win. :yeah:
JU has pretty much hit the nail on the head though. How much bagging does EA get, for instance?

IMHO this statement is just as ridiculous as "Ubisoft Devs are on your side working for you!".
Didn't result in a thread berating it though. :hmmm:
Ah, perspective; a uniquely wonderful thing.
Think hard before you write something that will make you look stupid on this forum.
And I love these threats that are starting to become the trend now (usually from people defending the game). You know, ones like this and ones accusing people of having "room temperature IQs" before they even respond.
Not sure why the need to get aggresive and personal because people don't subscribe to your all-knowing view...kinda says more about the person posting really (ITG comes to mind). ;)
So threaten away...I don't mind you or anyone here thinking I'm stupid. The important people to me know otherwise. ;)

Well, I have thought hard about this and although I bought your book, I don't agree with you.
Consider that the subsim market is a very small one and that being such a small market there is not much margin in it. There is little incentive for another developer to produce a rival subsim game set in WWII and even if they do decide to create it, they would have difficulty getting a publisher to pick it up, as they'd look at the market and think it was not worth their while to try to split the small market.
My point, is that if a game lumbers on, without being given the proper care and attention, then it will disuade others from producing a better version, which has had the time spent on it.
'Thunder Below' for example was cancelled by Dreamworks, because U-571 was being produced at Universal and Dreamworks did not want to compete with another WWII submarine film. That was with Spielberg lined up to direct Thunder Below as well! I know which one I would have preferred to see.
I do hope that SH5 is a brilliant game, but if it's not, then I hope it's brilliantly moddable but if it's not, then perhaps it would be best to drag the one eyed, one legged, deaf and dumb abomination out into the garden and hit it over the head with a shovel.

Nisgeis,
Thanks for buying the book. I hope you have enjoyed it.
As you say, the subsim market is limited. Maybe if UBI abandoned it, just maybe, someone would step in and produce something for us to play with.
At the moment that is very unlikely, unless a group like the GWX team developed a new game.
My only point is that UBI is the only game in town and we are doing ourselves a disfavor by knocking it in public and driving potential newbie buyers away.
I was quite happy with SH3 with 1.4 patch. GWX greatly improved it. Without UBI commiting itself to continue producing SH, chances are we would not have any subsims.
I think UBI deserves our support. Bashing SH 5 before we've seen it . . . Well, I already did my rant :DL
Good, bad or indiferent, Once I've seen the game, I will write an honest review and post it on Amazon.
In the meantime, we just have to wait.:salute:
:) When I read the title of this thread I had a totally different thought in mind.
I was half expecting someone to suggest the "enemies" in the game was someone other than the Allies and the cruel sea. Like maybe the Alien Nazi's from Star Trek: Enterprise or something.

"There's something rotten in the kingdom of Ubisoft."
Now, there, I said it....

My two cent's worth?
I'm glad Ubisoft is around developing and releasing subsim games for the P.C.
I'm glad that they are working on Silent Hunter 5.
I'm glad that they are actively involved on Subsim, ie receiving Q and A's and responding to our queries.
I'm also glad that i will be purchasing SH5, regardless of what may or may not be in the final release........
I'm also glad that i don't speculate and ponder and dwell and stress and stop my life wondering what is going to be in the final release.
There is a big difference in discussing the "possibilities" and "likelyhood" of product content upon final release from openly slagging or discrediting a game producer.....
The back and forthing of "how could Ubisoft do this", or "i will never buy the game if they don't or do this", or "if they don't do this with the game then i will do this" to "what i've seen in unreleased pics, screenshots, videos or leaked footage must be or will be the final product so then i won't buy it" is interesting.....
My thoughts on that? Patience......... how de we "really know" what we are going to get in the final product release?
Speculation, civilized, is one thing, but open discrediting before something is even released is, well, another.

Is plain stoopid! (my end of that quote)
I'm just sittin' here laughin' my butt off of all the negetive talk that is going on.
I preordered my copy from subsim and can wait 'til March 'cause I'm enjoying GWX Gold to much to quit. Finally got to 1943.
In short I want to say is Thank You to UBI and the dev team of Dan and Alex and the rest of the crew, and Thanks to Neal for subsim.com!!!

Addressing the title of the thread, "Who Is The Enemy?",
last time i checked it was the allies!!! :haha:
IMHO this statement is just as ridiculous as "Ubisoft Devs are on your side working for you!".
mmm, Yes and no, I expect the the Devs ask us (the hardcore crowd) what we would like to see in the SHV, then see if they can factor it in with everything else they must consider, such as;
What direction they want to take the series in themselves. (what will keep it interesting for them)
What will keep the franchise fresh, innovative and earn good reviews etc
What will appeal to the casual gamer and the new comer.
What is doable within the time and budget restrictions they have.
Which reminds me - Besides the "Ubi suits" Our biggest enemy is the 12 year old FPS ADD kiddy (AKA The Casual gamer)
He constanlty gets blamed for the dumbing down of the series. :D
But yeah this community is only a tiny fraction of those that SH5 need to impress.
