View Full Version : Crashing in Win 7 at startup

Hi folks, I apologize if this is covered elsewhere, but I'm not finding it on a search.

I am running Win 7 home, and installed SHIII using the procedures to strip Starforce, patch to 1.4, and swap in the no-DVD files from the ubi-approved thread.

The game is crashing on startup right after the load meter on the start screen fills. The game drops to desktop and a "Program has stopped working" window pops up.

I tried running in admin and stepping compatibility back from XP SP2 to WIN95. It happens the same in each case.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

:) Hi there Eviltodd :)
Have you tried to run it in resolution 1024x768 :DL
In Win7 it just can run res 1024x768 :yep:

I hope this helps :salute:

Do you mean setting desktop resolution to 1024x768? If so, it doesn't work. I'm sure I am missing some compatability setting in win 7. Unfortunately I am learning more about this OS by trying to get my legacy games working.

Thanks for the advice, though! I'll keep trying.

I'm having the same problem, but not with SHIII patched to 1.4b and the no-DVD files applied. That works fine, but what I miss is the richness that GWX brings to SHIII.

When I tried to apply GWX3 Gold to the above configuration, THAT"S when I get the crash during the load. After uninstalling, reinstalling SHIII, applying 1.4b, and adding the no-DVD files SHIII runs fine. In fact, my new machine is so fast I am now forced to let my crew man the deck gun. I'm a better shot than they are, but the mouse movements are so fast I can't adequately control the deck gun!

Small price to pay, I admit, but if anyone has a fix for these we'd sure like to hear it.

After having suffered several weeks' frustration in trying to install SHIII GWX/WAC into W7, I am pleased to say that I have finally succeeded in getting the modded SHIII up and running. In my case, the answer to my problem seems to have been applying the Vista 4Gb patch that comes with the WAC package. I had earlier applied this patch, but I mustn't have done it correctly, which error caused me to go off on a wild goose chase for a couple of weeks. Also, I think one has to install games in W7 using administrator's authorisation as well as running the game in Windows XP SP2 mode.

If you installed Silent Hunter to a location path that does not contain "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" in it you only have to 'Run as Administrator' with the game's setup, 1.4 Patch, and GWX installer (or similat supermods with an installer .exe). Most Install/Setup programs require this. These are only one-time events so are no big deal. Running JSGME is however not a one-time occurance. You'll have to do it fairly often. Running things as administrator can cause a security issue though!

I never have to run JSGME as administrator since I installed SH3 (with GWX that includes it) in 'C:\Games\Silent Hunter III'. If you install the 'JSGME Setup' because you didn't get it with a supermod or otherwise, it also suggests to install it in 'Program Files'. DON'T! Install it elsewhere and then you can copy and insert the real mod-enabler application (JSGME.exe) without security warnings or failure messages. Anything in 'Program Files' (x86) is treated with extra security vigilance by Vista/W7. Don't install stuff there if you need to modify it often.

[Edit]No need for compatibility either!
