Hey, have a look at this page: http://www.subsim.com/ssr/shells_fury.php (http://www.subsim.com/ssr/shells_fury.php)
Tell me if you see little boxes where the apostrophes go... I do. I'm trying to find out what is causing this, maybe a config file on the server, maybe my new PC, maybe my eyes are shot...
thanks!
Neal

Neal,
was this content pasted from an outside program like microsoft word where it was originally written?
if so, my website has done similar things when i have prepared information in microsoft office word and past the info into the site.

That's possible, originally. But they rendered fine on the old server. I noticed this when we migrated last year but never got around to it.

Yes sir, I see it too. The apostrophes and the hyphens have been replaced with little boxes. I see things like that when I browse the web on my old cellphone, but never on an actual computer.
Weird. It doesn't recognize the apostrophes or hyphens, but all other punctuation marks (commas, quotations, semi-colons, etc.) are fine.
Wish i could be more helpful as to the cause. good luck:salute:
Yeah, I see the buggers. Now, how do we take them out? :hmmm:

I changed my browser's character encoding from Unicode to Western and the problem went away. :woot:

I sees 'em too, as has been said above I've only noticed this kind of thing in the past with text that has been imported from Word or some such. No idea why it would suddenly "go bad" moving from one server to another though if it was okay initially.

It's the encoding. Need to fix your header.

Right, but I think the real solution lies in making the webpage work for the reader, otherwise I have to e-mail 4,266,092 people and ask them to change their browser settings.:shucks:

Go here, http://validator.w3.org/ run that URL
if you use firefox;
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843
It'll show you what the errors are on the page.

Like Subnuts said, worked for me.........Do not email anyone. Hold the check you are giving the movers until they correct it.
IE 8 worked with and without compat mode on.
Firefox 3.5.7 displayed the question marks.
I believe another posted had it correct, it may be caused by copy/pasting from a doc. If it was word there are format info that can cause this. Paste it to notepad then copy and paste back in. See if it works anyway...

This page: http://www.subsim.com/ssr/shells_fury.php
is missing the
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />
tag from the head section (or whatever is the right encoding for that page).
blind me!! it's there, but it's still wrong for some reason.
One solution I can suggest is how I've converted some of my pages from ISO-8859-1 into UTF-8 is:
Create new blank page with ISO-8859-1 encoding and then copy&paste the body section of the Shells of fury review page (which is currently windows-1252) into that new blank page and overwrite the old page.
One more edit:
w3 validator says the page is in utf-8, but the head section has tag: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">

Neal, I use to see these sometimes when there is a translation issue of text written on German keyboards put up in a place that "is English" in the widest technological meaning. the problem are special keys and the German "Umlaute" like ä, ö, ü, keyboards are obviously different here. There have been a number of reviews , also at tanksim and subsim, that first were displayed correctly for me, then after some months started to display the little boxes, and again months later eventually started to be displayed correctly again. The problem also showed up with the reviews I have written for you.
Maybe server-related, that they changed and switched some things!?
Try changing this line
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
To this line
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

Hello Neal,
I see the apostrophes and the hyphens have been replaced with little boxes.
I am using Firefox/2.0.0.11.

Strange though how some have the problem and others don't, as I said fine on mine, mabe it's a windows version thing, I'm running XP Pro with FF 2.0.:hmmm:

On an unrelated note, I've the same issue with this page as with the SH5 Interview in Opera... I haven't tested it yet, but I guess it works fine in Firefox...
In Firefox it works, the boxes show up with little letters inside namely
FF
FD
I guess there were some apostrophes in the dev team interview too, but I don't think that one had boxes instead of apostrophes.
Just checked, works fine there.

:haha: Probably what longam says:
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">:haha:
I usually type articles and review in Word and paste into Front Page. I needed to change the default character set used by the server from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 in the htaccess file, and I could not remember how I did it 5 years ago.
