I've been away from SubSim for some time, so I haven't followed the development of SH5 too closely. What I've gathered over the last couple of days was kinda sobering, though. Still, I guess I can live with a single boat type and even a campaign that ends in '43. At least until the modders take up the challenge.
But what about the actual campaign? In SH3 after a sh$tstorm from the community a "dynamic campaign" à la Aces of the Deep was implemented, which was basically a sandbox-type 'open world' campaign environment. For SH4 this was expanded with more varied missions.
But what about SH5? I've read through all dev interviews and watched a couple of vids, but I honestly still have no real clue about the nature of SH5's campaign system. It is more dynamic, which the devs keep telling us. Which is fine, but then SH3's campaign wasn't so 'dynamic' at all to start with. Our actions will have an actual influence on events, which sounds great, too.
But how exactly will the campaign actually play out?
From what I gathered SH5 will consist of about 10 campaigns, covering the time from the start of the war in Sept. '39 to 1943. These campaigns are meant to tell the story of the U-Boat war, from the baltic sea to the med, the arctic convoy battles, operation drumbeat, etc... each of these campaigns seems to have its own objectives.
So, as far as I understand it, you will operate in each campaign in some kind of 'scripted' environment where you're able to make certain decisions. For example, in the Malta campaign after you sink a couple of ships british task forces from Gibraltar and Alexandria seem to respond and set course towards you. You now have to decide whether to attack the 'reinforcements' or keep 'isolating Malta'.
Now, my question is how dynamic or scripted these events are. Will the "Malta" campaign always end up with such a scenario? And what does that mean for other campaigns?
The idea of having a number of campaigns, each with its own dynamic environment could actually be a very nice idea. IF these campaigns are more than basically a large, single scripted mission with dynamic elements.
Honestly, the idea of losing SH3's "open world" large campaign is... irritating. I still try to think positive, but some more details about the campaign system would be highly appreciated.
