A f**king Great Horned Owl.

11:30pm, YOWL! I yell out door, then go on patio. My daughter's 5-6lb kitty, "Princess" is in a flower bed making hissing noises. I got a flashlight, look at her, and what I thought were feathers around her (thought she had killed a bird) was fur.

On closer inspection, there was also bowel in front of her.

Greeaaaat. My 6 YO daughter's cat has been eviscerated by something. Wife examines her, yep, bowel.

Did you know that there are all kinds of vet specialists now? They're %$#@%$# expensive :o , but we couldn't bear to tell my daughter we didn't try. The kids won't notice that we'll take a far less fancy vacation this summer, and it's all sunk in the cat, lol.

Princess, covered with talon punctures, had her guts put back inside, and is post-op now. Cross your fingers for her if for no other reason than once a 6lb cat costs a certain amount to fix, it's be nice if she didn't die.

She's a tough cat (she's a rescued stray who lives outside), and could get away from anything on the ground I think, but air attack? SOL from air attack.

Actually, we have pack rats here, too ("desert wood rat" is their proper common name), and pack rats like to eat DC wires. You know, like wiring harnesses in cars. Saab A/C wires cost $795, for example. I know, cause I bought TWO. That was before Princess. Post Princess I haven't seen a rodent.

I'm gonna tell myself that a cat that costs a few thousand bucks is worth it for the ratting :)

My almost 4 year old thought I should use one of my guns and kill the owl, or that princess should be armed.

I think she'd need a backpack-mounted CIWS of some kind.

At 5-6 pounds, dunno how to mount the CIWS, though...

Assuming she survives, the question is where will she live. She's an outside cat*, and even should she move inside, we have a doggy door. In our experience it takes about 2 in and outs by the dog for a cat to figure out the door, at which point she's once again owl-bait. Then there is the fact that I think I'm allergic, so having her outside was nice.

She was a stray who found my daughter. She's an outside only cat, too. I was totally prepared for her to simply disappear at some point, we have bobcats (neighbor saw one on my roof a couple weeks ago), coyotes, black bear, eagles, and owls (not to mention rattlesnakes).

I sort of forgot about the birds, frankly. If she got bit by a rattler, we'd either know it right away, or she'd die. If a bobcat or coyote got her, we'd never see her again. The birds... well, again, for the most part unless we saw it happen, and the bird dropped her, we'd never see her.

What I didn't expect was a mortally wounded cat. Presented with that, it was hard not to want to at least try. The surgeon is the nicest guy, actually, and she's become sort of a mascot over there, she's about as bad off an animal as they'd ever seen that's actually survived. Her left side... wow. She has a lac from her hip all the way down the leg, and it connects to where she was disemboweled. Numerous holes from talons. It's amazing she's alive.

She's fine from the wounds, actually, and quite chipper, but she cannot pee, and cannot walk on her rear legs because it turns out she has a spinal fracture. That said, her legs have started moving, though weak, and they're going to try removing the catheter tomorrow and see if she has any bladder function (neurogenic problem at this point).

All we need is one rear leg working, and the ability to pee...

The vet surgeon likes her so much that he said he'd not be able to put her down himself, and if we elect for a long term wait and see and it is too hard, he'll take her home for free to help us out (like she needs to be cathed, etc).

Gee it doesn't sound good at all, poor thing,:oops: though she is brighter, good to hear that the doc will take her home and care for her for free depending on her progress, let's hope she recovers on her own soon.:yep:

When she couldn't pee or walk, but otherwise showed a normal neuro exam, it was looking very bad. Apparently a decent % of cats heal from a spinal fracture though. Better than a "grim" prognosis anyway.
