Hi im new to SH3 just buying it the other day. My question is that i have an older computer and SH3 runs choppy. I have turned off high detail and lowerd particle density but the game still runs kinda of choppy when i switch stations etc. I dont mind the game not loking top notch, I just want it to run smoothly. Also I had friend install it and he installed the gray wolves expansion pack. I dont know if this make a differance or not

thanks

update: my spec are Intel Celeron D 3.33ghz cpu, 512mb RAM, ATI radeon xpress 1100 series

You didn't tell us what your own specs are.

Anyway, I use two programs in conjunction, and it makes a huge difference on my old rig:

First is End It All:
http://www.docsdownloads.com/Tier1/enditall.htm

Second is Game Booster:
http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Between the two I have much less chopiness in SH3.

Welcome aboard FeelinLucky,

It looks like you may need more ram. I have 2 GB of ram with a 1GB video card and my game runs good.

yes, you should (if you can) have 2GB memory, 512MB definitely is a break on SH3.

GWX should run on the same specs as SH3 when on the lowest settings but I'd advise a minimum of 1GB and preferably 2GB http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

thanks, I started to suspect it was the low amount of RAM that I have:salute:

I have a similar problem I thought I'd post here.

I have SH3 with GWX installed, but my game keeps resetting speed compression back down to 1 when I try to through the canal. Every time I try to increase the speed it always goes down to 1, or sometimes to 4. This is very annoying because I don't want to spend my entire evening watching insignificant events in real-time.

Is this a problem with my computer that forces the speed back down to 1? I have 3gb ram with 2.10 duo processor.

I don't think it depends on the specs of your computer, but with the settings of TC.
open SH3-Commander options and see what TC is set "when near land".
there you can change that to whatever you like, but be careful! :03:

I'm running GWX3.0 on a system with lower specs than yours....using SH3 Commander change the setting to 64 or even 128, you should be fine http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Welcome aboard mate... I have an old rig and used to have the same problem as you, same memory as well 512. Doubling the RAM to 1G sorted it out for me :yep: not perfect mind, but graphics are fine on the open ocean, just a little 'scratchy' when inside the sub thats all.

Have fun....

This is very annoying because I don't want to spend my entire evening watching insignificant events in real-time.I'd say crashing into the shore of the channel or into ships passing by isn't insignificant. Wasting a patrol due to major damage or even a complete career because you got killed takes alot more time. Increasing the "when near land" setting a bit higher is good, since the default is just too precautious, but ignoring such warnings is risky. Once you get out of the Kiel-kanal and out of the Deutsche Bucht you can relax again. I allways want to drop back to 1x TC. Destroyers don't wait until you managed to say "Hello".

I used a similar program waaaaaay back with XP. Didn't know there was one for Vista and W7. Nothing like keeping current is there?..

Mucho thank-u for the heads up.

Well, don't get too excited yet. I still use XP. I didn't know it was OS-specific.

As previously pointed out, more ram (even just doubling it) will get you the biggest improvement for the minimal amount of $$$. If you've got Win 7 (not sure if it was available in Vista or not) but using readyboost with a fast usb flash drive can add a noticeable boost, especially graphics wise.

The key here is that for readyboost to really work the flash drive must have really fast i/o speeds, otherwise you won't really get any performance gain. While most of the memory get used in paging, some gets dedicated to video. Friend of mine with an older machine that just put on 7 got a nice surprising boost of about 5-10% when he enabled it with a 4gb drive.
