View Full Version : Out of torpedoes!!! What to do?

I ran into a convoy very early in the war, and used up all my torpedoes!! I still have a full supply of ammo for my deck gun. Should I stick around and use all that up, or go back to port?

ah, depends on what sub you're on, if you're in a type II don't even bother, i dont think the AA gun on the deck can sink anything.

But no, don't go unless you want to duke it out with the destroyers.

I have used the AA gun on a Type IIa (GWX 3.0) to take out Patrol Boats (don't recommend that one as you *will* take damage) and merchants. I've used it to take out a Tramp Steamer and one or two other types...maybe a Medium Cargo but don't recall. It took some time but it worked (and not even a torpedo hit first). I don't know if it was the upper hits (explosions) or the waterline hull hits (flooding) that did the trick because I wound up with a mix of both.

I've wondered about the ports. In 1939, what other ports can be accessed other than Kiel? I see other Blue names on the shoreline like Cuxhaven, Wilhelmshaven and something-munde....etc. Are any of these ports where you can dock and resupply? The ships and their schedules can be found in the F1 menu, but not ports.

Go home. Drink heavily. Visit a brothel. Get an upgrade.

You have earned it.

I sank over 19,000 tons of shipping with my 88 two patrols ago. I say make up your mind about a resupply or heading for home, and gun down whatever merchants you see on the way!

Head for home and only shell lone ships you might encounter during the trip (provided it is early in the war).

To all: I actually found that convoy on the night of September 3rd/4th, '39. Strange things: this convoy was ALREADY outfitted w/search lights, and ALREADY had two escorts!!! And was already a convoy, for that matter. Curious!!

Anywho, I made it to the Atlantic just west of Ireland via the English channel during peacetime. I shan't return that way, I think!!

Be careful what you shoot. Some merchant ships like the SCF will shoot back.

Don't assault a convoy with only your deckgun. Unless you are absolutely sure they do not shoot back, or their protecting escorts aren't there to shoot back.

So where are you exactly (grid please!) and what type are you in. Maybe we can find you a pitstop.

I have the same thing. I was supposed to go to a grid location (iirc CG79, only March 1940). I went around the Brits from the north where I ran into a convoy inbound for the north passage to the irish sea. Almost got to the 100K tonnage level (thanks to the HMS Rodney) after using all my torpedos and shells on the remaining convoy members. So I considered going back home. But I noticed the uboat tender in Vigo, Portugal opened up business recently. So I went there and docked. I haven't started my extended patrol yet so I don't know how many torpedos it has for me.

ah yes, refueling, but referring to pisces' comment on uboat tenders, do they open and close according to the dates? cause i realized one of the uboat tenders on my map has disappeared :(

I don't know the grid, exactly, but it is at the southern approach to the Irish Sea. It's a pretty high traffic area. Now I just have to wait for this game gale to stop blowing so I can shoot something!!! I guess I might as well start homeward via the Orkneys, etc.

Ah - jimbuna's Q-ship. While I love that ship I also hate it!!! Even though I should know what it's called I still end up getting caught by it every now and again...

Damn you, jim, for creating that little bugger!

Hmm, september '39 is quite early for uboat tender visits.

I guess you could still go home through the channel. Hug the coast of France. You have to be extra carefull and stay far away from patrols. As you have nothing to defend yourself with. Dive immediately if caught on the surface during the day and stay low on the time compression so they can't 'jump' on you. If you notice a patrol comming toward you, turn to a direction away and perpendicular to their course. You just need to increase the distance of their closest point of approach. (when they show AOB 90) Putting them on your 180 isn't as efficient evading. The farther away you are from the 90 AOB point the less likely they can see/hear you.

Time your transit past Dover and Calais to be in the middle of the night, when their visual detection capability is the least. Then you can surface and run through it as fast as possible. But also be on the alert for patrols on the other side.

Are there other ports where one can resupply? Or only supply ships (per schedule) and home ports?

Check the ports that are blue coloured.

Well that makes for a lot of options - didn't realize they were available for resupply. Thanks.

Early war... yea Ive shelled convoys... there not hard if you figure out what your doing...

Well, it would seem I have located an unescorted convoy (my sonarman doesn't notice any warships on the hydrophone). I am getting right ahead of it and will submerge, and let it pass over me and see if any of the ships are armed. It's possible they don't have anything, and if that's the case, I will shadow the convoy and wait for calm weather to do something to it which is done in prisons around the world on a daily basis.

If you are playing GWX you should find a supply ship in the Cannary Islands (grid DH) at the start of the war. And a supply ship near Greenland (grid AD) starting from October '39.

Well, I got in front of the convoy, cut my engines, ordered silent running, then dove to periscope depth. THAN the sonarman said he heard a warship!!!

I NEVER should have left Bernard in charge!!!

There usually is a big one in the center of it.

Keep you head down and let it pass. When it is at a save range, surface and go get your supplies.

I started my follow-up patrol from Vigo. I got the same torpedo loadout as I started with in Willemshaven. However, SH3 Commander also found it neccesary to take one of my crewmembers off-board and replace him with another. Curious how they managed to get him on that supply ship though.

I don't actually have SH3 Commander installed.

And maybe that one guy had been dropped off by a previously visiting u-boat, or had been smuggled there via land routes!!!

Sh3 Commander doesn't matter for your case. (in this regard) It just messed up the crew-shift routine I had established. That's all.

If you radio your status to BDU, they will certainly order you back to base. On the way, you can keep a sharp lookout for a convoy or task force (3 or more ships not previously spotted or reported), and if you radio in the contact report, and are within range of a German airfield, you MIGHT get the Luftwaffe to launch an attack.

Disguised as a gypsy, for instance. Funny there was only one, though. Two would have been easier.
