It can be made to work on windows 7. Just don't instal it in the defult locatin and run it in compatability mode for windows xp service pack three and it should work. If it dosen't try lowering your resolution on you desk top to 1024x768 or lower. If you don't like useing that desk top res, like me, you can run the game in a window and keep your desk top at any size you want. Just launch the game in the perscribed res and then go into the game's options and uncheck the run in full screen option.

Ahoy,

erm, I'm having trouble with windows 7.

I upgraded with from vista and the existing installation of SH3 with grey wolves doesn't work.

Apparently windows 7 does not work with the version of starforce which sh3 originally shipped with.

I don't want to divert this thread about sf issues, but I have tried the following:

uninstalled grey wolves and sh3.

removed sf (with the official tool from the starforce website).

reinstalled sh3.

tried patching it, but it won't patch - it says it doesn't recognise a campaign file or something.

Now I'm stuck.

I'm in the UK and I understand that new copies of sh3 come without sf - is it worth buying a new copy for a fiver to cut out this hassle?

Over the years I've spent hundreds if not thousands of hours in my sub, now it's all come to an end.

I'm not waving, but drowning. :damn:

Anyone know how best to proceed?

I had the same problem. Tried it several times according to the solution suggested by the community but it didn't workout. The problem seems to be that Windows 7 doesn't recognize Starforce no matter if you update the driver or not. I'm sry to say I had to download a nocd-crack. :shifty:

EDITED by moderator: Please no such links here. PM the user and send him whatever info you want, but we want to keep subsim.com unlinked to cd-crack webs.

Thanks

No problems. I just put the SHIII dis in and it downloaded right to C:/Program files/Ubisoft/SHIII. I then loaded GWX3 and some mods with no problems at all.

Kaleun Cook and Grey Wolf - thanks I've now done all that but I get the following message on launching the patched, cracked, but otherwise unmodified sh3:

'Cannot initilize 3D engine'.

I'm guessing its something to do with my graphics card. It was ok under Vista lol.

Any ideas anyone?

What resolution are you runing your desktop at? Chances are good that you are running it at a resolution higher than 1024x786 if you have tried all the other fixes and still geting that error. If I am right all you need to do to make the game work is lower your desktop resolution to or lower than 1024x786 and the game will run just fine. If you don't like the desktop resolution that low you are in luck beacouse the game can run at any desktop resolution if you run it windowed; the which can be achieved via the in game options menue.

Some one should make a list of all the Windows 7 fixes and sticky them; this site is good for awnsers but they can be hard to find some times you konw.

Ok, I've got it running through the following steps. Perhaps it might help anyone else with problems in windows7:

1. Remove sf from previous installation with the official removal tool.

2. Re-install sh3 but do not run it yet.

3. patch it to 1.4b (run as administrator otherwise it won't work)

4. My version of sh3 came with sf, so I ran the crack, as posted above in this thread.

5. Change the desktop resolution to 1024 x 768.

6. run sh3 without the Cd in the tray.

7. go to options and de-select full screen so it will run sh3 in its own window. Exit sh3

8. Change desktop back to my original resolution.

9. Install Grey Wolves.

sh3/grey wolves now runs but in its own small window which I have to squint at, but it's better than nothing.

The alternative is to change my desktop resolution to 1024 x768 everytime I want to run sh3/grey wolves in full screen mode.

Thanks everyone.

I should of course add that I do not advocate using cd cracks etc. I bought sh3 when it first came out and consider myself to be an honest customer. The above simply enables me to continue enjoying the sim, and I'll be queueing up to buy sh5 when it's released.
