View Full Version : Crew Management in SH3 GWX

Hi. I have some questions about compartment efficiency.
1. The game manual talks about different levels of efficiency (like minimal and normal). Is this information indicated anywhere in the Crew Management screen (F7) of SH3? How can I know whether I've gone from minimal to normal to high?
2. Is there any benefit to a Radioman having the Radioman qualification on the earlier subs which have no radar? Or is there nothing specific about those roles, and just an efficiency level for the overall compartment - so they work as a team to find and identify targets regardless (i.e. just the green bar filling up above the compartment is what matters)?
3. Does efficiency in the engine room affect speed? Fuel efficiency? Anything specific? I have read that torpedo room efficiency affects reload times and percentage of duds, etc., but what about the engine room?
4. And what about efficiency in the Helm?
Thanks!

The horizontal green bar above each bar shows the overall effecience of that team. I rotate all my crew every four game hours, and every two in bad weather. The other option is to use SH3 Commander to set it to 'No Fatigue'.

Your second guess is correct. The 'Radioman' qualification is good for radio, sound and radar, and affects the compartment overall.

I'm not sure about speed, but in SH3 if the Engine Room efficiency falls to low they all go to sleep and the engines shut down. There is little in the game more frustrating than to be cruising along at high TC and get the message "Not enough men in diesel room, Herr Kaleun!", and then take half of a game hour to get the TC back to normal and switch all the crew out.
4. And what about efficiency in the Helm?
That one I'm not too sure about, as it is the compartment least affected by fatigue. By that I mean that you can leave the men there for eight hours or more before they get tired, so I've never had that compartment go low enough to find out.
Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the reply Sailor Steve.

Okay, so there is no way to know precisely whether a compartment is running Minimal, Normal, or High efficiency? Just the green bar? I can make do with that; just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something since it's mentioned in the manual.
Yes, I can definitely tell when the efficiency drops below Minimal because they stop doing whatever they're supposed to be doing! :) I noticed the torpedo reload time just seems to scale with the green bar, getting faster the more green there is. I can't see any real differences with the other compartments, but I'm sure they're there - like the response time of the helm, accuracy of the radio team, etc., which I've read about. None of them are easy to measure, though, like torpedo reload time and the simple fact that the compartment is either doing its job or not.

The place it really shows up is of course the engine room, where if the effecienct gets to low the engines shut down. Next, as you said, is the torpedo room.
The watch crew is a funny one for me. The 1WO usually makes it almost fully green just by himself, and it only takes one extra man to finish the job. Something in myself makes me put a full crew up there anyway.
This is one of the areas where SH4 is a massive improvement.
Another area where the green bar will give you a good indication of efficiency is the damage control crew. You want to build up efficiency there very early in your career. :salute:

Hm, by that do you mean assigning the repair qualification to petty officers? Or does experience somehow build up for specific areas? (Or maybe you just mean noticing/using that damage control compartment rather than ignoring it. :) )
Thanks!

Experience does help but the repair qualification is the quickest means of getting the improvement required.

Yes, so far the first two I've been assigning are for sonar/radio and repair.
As for experience, though, there is no task-specific experience, right? Just general experience for each sailor which improves fatigue rates and efficiency?
