Super-noob question:
On my map, the ruler only reads out in nm (or km if I have metric selected.) The TDC needs yards when you dial in a range.
How do you get the ruler to read out in yards under a certain distance? I know I've seen it like that on tutorial videos.
thanks

If you're playing with just the basic game, you need to patch it to 1.4 ... if playing the U-Boat upgrade, the ruler should already switch to yards at about 5 nautical miles.

FYI 2000 yards is 1nm. A nautical mile (6,000 ft) is longer than a standard mile (5,280 feet, 9 inches, 12 sheep, 6 ducks, and the neighbor's house, plus or minus the day of the week, unless it's Friday when you divide by 3, except on a leap year of course). So 1.5 miles is 3,000 yards.
Or you could just use metric, a system of measurement that makes sense, god forbid.

Yes.. the metric system does make more sense, but I'd rather use Imperical for 2 reasons:
1 - That's what we used on the real boat
2 - You can calculate a contact's speed with a 3 minute timer vice 3:15
Thanks for the tips though.
Downloading 1.4 now.... oohh... it just got done.

So much for that...
I tried to install the 1.4 patch and got this message:
"The setup has detected that no versoin of silent hunter 4 is installed...."
I bought and downloaded the game on Steam. My steam folder is not on my C: drive... could that be the problem? I have a lot of games on Steam, and I really don't want them on my OS partition (not enough room), and wouldn't want to move them anyway.
The game shows up on my list of installed programs (add/remove programs menu). I'm running XP SP3. Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem that you did. I got my copy on Steam as well. I just went ahead and bought the U-Boat Mission expansion pack. It updated the game to 1.5 and it's only 5 bucks. I thought it was completely worth the price.

Bought, and downloading now. Thanks for the tip.
Kinda stupid that this is the only way to get the update, but I would have eventually bought this expansion pack anyway.

As I understand it, the problem lies in the folder that the game installs into, which is a Steam folder, and when the patch looks for the default location and cannot find it, it gives up instead of offering you the ability to enter the location manually, which would make waaaaay too much sense to be sensible.
Or perhaps this is a stunningly brilliant move by Ubisoft's sales department, ensuring that the user will get pissed off and buy the U-Boat missions pack, just to get 1.5, as we both did.
Touche, Ubisoft, touche.
