Here is some actual in game video of SHV. It's part of a German game review and it starts at 10.15 into the sequence. It gives us a good look at the interface and the game screens. I can't see it posted anywhere else here, but apologies if it has been. :DL

Look new to me Terry. Very nice looking game we have coming to us. This one looks like it will be very good right off the shelf. :yeah:

Some of the other games look cool also. I see two my daughter would like.

hehe, i did notice they are using the english language but wiz ze German accents zis time, i think the first thing i`ll be doing is switching to the German language option, i guess its still better than the American accents they used in sh3 though.

Hmm, maybe but I don;t want to have negative speculation. Maybe it was some sort of flooding status or something. In any case the player shouldn't be able to see that sort of thing, same with seeing the enemy los/ros. Hopefully it can be disabled in options or in a realistic difficulty setting.

I still worry, even if the health bar or whatever is turned off, won't the game mechanic be the same? I was hoping for a departure from the health "system" (two shot kill right?) and into a more dynamic, physics based system.

Right now, we have a cluster f**k of merged threads.

I think the real point is that if you visit here every day, then you are probably aware of where these merged posts are, but many like me don't visit here every day. I couldn't see any thread title that would lead me to believe that the video had already been posted, so I posted it. Mookie's thread must have been on page two before a new post put it back on page one. New SH5 In-game footage!!!

We need a sticky thread called something like 'Silent Hunter V new videos and screenshots'. That way, everyone knows where to put any new image or video of the upcoming game. :)

When I first saw this thread I thought "Don't people ever read these things?" But you're right - it wasn't stickied, and I do come here every single day and read every single thread, so what was obvious to me might easily have been missed by somebody else.

On the other hand, when something like this happens it's so much fun to join in the finger-jabbing and joking.

So, on the one hand I apologize, but on the other I still say :O:!

hey, cut him a little slack guys, we all make mistakes and TDK is certainly no noob so i think he deserves the benefit of doubt here and he wasnt trying to do anything but share info.

this forum is getting ready for the release of the sh5 game in only 12 short weeks and part of that preparation is to get back to the strict decission making about what is worthy of being stickied.

all of the stickies were cleared out to eliminate the BS threads and general discussion threads that were very popular along with anything old.

we wont be stickying anything anymore just based on its popularity so if it is something new that ubi released about the new sh5 game then it will be stickied for a week and then unstickied to stand on its own popularity.

the time for stickying just anything has past and threads will now stay or fade away based on their popularity alone.

Subsim's policy regarding sticky threads has always puzzled me. Not to have a sticky thread that shows people immediately where to put any new video footage or screenshots for SHV is madness and is just asking for this kind of chaos to repeat itself.

It's really not that big of a deal, but some folks here get so aggitated when a duplicate post is created....and the solution is so simple.

Some might say that the solution is to search thoroughly before posting. Personally, I will always scan page one of the Forum before posting something I think is new, but I'm not going further than that. And if that means that something gets posted that is already part of a merged thread with a title that may not even relate to the new subject matter then so be it.

Subsim's sticky policy is the real problem here. Common sense tells you that for the three or four months leading up to the release of any new game, a sticky thread dedicated to screenshots and videos is a must.

My two cents, Neal. :)

You'll be able to turn most helpers off. If not through the game's options, then through easy mods. Difficulty depends on the following:
- campaign files, giving convoys more escorts and making them tougher, more air cover
- enemy sensors
Both SH3 and SH4 lacked a bit of difficulty in the campaigns. Sensors weren't bad though and the game could prove very difficult at times. Even if the SH3 vanilla campaign will be flawless, there's bound to be mods to make it even more realistic. Sensors should be as simple to mod as they are now.

The problem is that depending on enemy sensors, your tactics can change dramatically. It's easy to make it completely unforgiving but I'd rather be able to use the real tactics used in the war. I'm hoping for a layered approach to sensors. In SH3 and SH4 the enemy is stuck in a loop waiting for you to pass certain thresholds. I'd like them to use real sensors this time and even spook themselves through false readings. It would be fun to see the escorts suddenly start attacking empty water because they've passed above a wreck or move away from the convoy because of a tired watchman that thinks he spotted a periscope in rough waters.

You are worrying over nothing mate. There is no question about being able to disable the health bars. Of coarse they will have an option to turn off health bars in realism settings . However i think as a first person player a health bar for yourself will be a great addition . Think of how more realistic it will be to have CO2 and cold exposure and wounds etc tied to your health bar .

IMHO may be better tied not to healthbar, but to the different first person view HDR effects, similiar to the rain drops, like for e.g. color diminishing, DOF decreasing and so on, may be sound distortion :yep:

P.S. As about ships' healthbars, they would be helpful at least for ships' damage system modding/tweaking :D

01-02-10, 05:02 AM
A general health bar for the player's boat would be exceptional. As the curent game is I am constantly wondering just how beat up I realy am after some depth charge attacks. I remember one time I lost my #2 torpido tube, both my radar and radar warning antenas damaged my forward bateries and lost one of my AA guns; on top of that I almost lost the ship to crush depth twice due to flooding but managed to pull away from the fight. Thinking I was badly damaged and one depth charge away from cracking a hole in the boat I headed for home with torpidos still on board and ample fule. Turns out I only took a 2% hit to hull integraty.

If I had known that I would have kept going and a health bar I could have told me that. Pluss the captin and crew would know exactly what the health bar would tell the player so there is no realisum conflict.

Nice vidio by the way, if only I spoke some German though. I kind of want to know what they were going on about.

Since I received fast and great help with my latest problem, I'd like to return the favor to you guys. :yep: I have translated the german video commentary to english as accurate as I can do it. Maybe there's some info in there you were eager to get. Enjoy!

*video starts at 10:15*

Today we will have a first look on the new "Silent Hunter V". The submarine simulation offers first of all an all-new interface, which is way easier to use than in the previous games.

*video switches to periscope screen*

Now let's head over to the first mission, which we will use to get you acquainted with everything. In the upper right corner we have the possibility to switch camera - to the big map for example. Additionally, we can check on crew and ship status here as well as last radio messages.

*video switches to 1st person*

Before we go on with the controls, we will also have a look at the inner parts of the submarine. Here, there's a lot to explore, and everything is just like in a submarine back in those days. Also, the different crew members can be talked to, although shortly after departure there's not much to talk about.

*video switches to engines room*

One last look goes towards the engines room. Again, everything here is just like in the well-known movie (he's referring to "Das Boot"). To stick to the movie, let's to a practice drill. On the lower left, you can set the depth of your submarine as well as your speed.

*video switches back to periscope*

Let's get back to controls. How do you actually navigate your submarine? Pretty easy: In the area map which we have decreased in size in the lower left, you can set waypoints and smoothly move them around. This has direct influence on your course. By the way: Our traveling speed is set up very high right now, to show the process of navigation to you in a better way.

*video switches to outer camera*

For the end of the demonstration, let's have a look at another mission. Here we have to defend a harbor which is attacked...

*video switches to map screen*

...by a big enemy fleet. Here things get working quite fast and we prepare our torpedo tubes.

*video switches back to periscope*

Here, it is important to set the torpedo's depth correctly, so that the torpedo doesn't pass the target. When we are all set, the word is "Fire!", and soon the first torpedo is in the water. And since it's so much fun, the second torpedo follows right away!

At beginning of 2010, it's your turn. Then, "Silent Hunter 5" is released for PC.

Might be the compass there. The engine dial I can see on the lower left; looks like a slider with buttons. That might be a space saver on the screen but to me it doesn't feel right. I can deal with that layout but I still prefer the dials.

The good news is that the Type VII(A) is available, which hopefuly means the Type IX(A) will be available at war's start.

The bad news is that Ubi still has not learned that ALL nations use Nautical Miles at sea, NOT Kilometers.

Since most of the time is spent out at sea the following regards graphics is the most important:
Sea and sky
U-boat and crew
Ships
Aircraft
most other graphics I don't care about really.
The other most important thing is game play realism:
sensors
tools
AI intelligence
Dynamic campaign
U-boat and ship dynamics
To me the perfect solution would have been a major graphics upgrade to SHIII with GWX!!:yep: Yes I've said it before and is my opinion only!:O:

By the way: Our traveling speed is set up very high right now, to show the process of navigation to you in a better way.

Heh, maybe it's a present from Ubisoft to all the modders out there. "We do some bad/wrong stuff on purpose, so you folks know right away what you have to mod first!" :har:

Well, think of it this way. The modders are more attentive to historical accuracy right down to the smallest details. The devs don't have that luxury to do that since they have a timetable and budget. Don't forget they also have the executives to answer to.

How come this video wasn't posted on the frontpage? I only just found it! This is the biggest thing to happen to Subsims since Red Storm Rising came out on the C64! Wow, what a polished product we're getting this time. It's almost like SH1 to 4 were practice and this is the real thing. Very impressed. :DL

are you talking about the main subsim page or the sh5 forums because there was a sticky with the video release for several weeks and this thread has been staying at the top of the forum so its been posted there for a while

Of course I'm talking about the frontpage, that's where the headlines are supposed to be. And what bigger headline can you have on a subsim website than any news about SH5?! Especially a video featuring a good chunk of actual gameplay in the most anticipated Ssubsim of all time! Don't waste your time arguing with me, just admit how fantastic it looks so The Devs get shown some appreciation for a change!! :DL

I guess I am dumb. I have never heard of this before. Is this a current game or one under development?

Sorry for the delay. The last beta version was from 2007 i think. But they had a news update talking about new compilations so I guess the thing is still running. Who knows what it will turn into... I usually keep a close eye on their page. Everything so far has been top notch and the open source allows for some very detailed "modding". If SH5 bytes the dust, I'll see if I can lend them a hand in my free time.
