View Full Version : Realistic patrol length?

I'm trying to get the most out of my experience in SH4 and I have a question about patrol lengths and that sort of stuff.
How long did the fleet boats stay out for? Is coming back to Midway for gas and then turning right back around for more action realistic? Or should I just head right on back to pearl?
Also is there a website that does for US subs what uboat.net does for U-Boats?
Thanks

Two to three months, or until torpedoes or fuel were exhausted. Yes, you could refit (refuel and rearm) but how long could you and your crew be cooped up inside that tube before you went stir-crazy?

I think the fleet boats were designed for 70/80 days at sea. Sometimes I re-fit but most of the time it is RTB.

Never found one that goes into that degree of detail.
Check out http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/personalities.html
Just looking at the records of some of the boats, 30-45 days seems typical, with the occasional push out to 60+, and similarly rare two- or three-week patrols.

Aside, from http://www.fleetsubmarine.com/, another nice resource is http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/04idx.htm
One thing about finding info for fleetboats and the PTO in general, you really have to dig around. Little gems like this: http://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/USSBS/IJO/index.html or this http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/rep/WDR/WDR58/index.html
There isn't a singular indepth "bible" reference like uboat.net for fleet submarines. It's all spread out all over the place.

Depending upon one's point of view that's what you get when you win the war. The ability to keep all your information quiet.:ping:

Hehe, remember when we all first started, 10 refits and sink 500K tons before we docked....silly. I say allow one refit for torps, any other should be fuel only.....mod it.

I'm commanding an S-18 , and i only have 12 torpedoes, so i sunk 3 merchants and i was out of torpedoes, so i had to head back home :D

I would be inclined to say that you could re-fit as much as you want. Think of it as shore leave for the men :DL. Depending on how many ships I've sunk, I typically go back once to refit at Midway.
