View Full Version : Game won't unpause

Hey, first thread in the SH4 room...

Anyways, I got SH4 Gold edition for Christmas, and after getting home last night finally loaded it up onto our computer (My computer is down and out at the moment, and wouldn't be able to run SH4 anyways), got it working and quickly opened up the Navigation lesson to make sure all was working, then closed the game for the night and restarted the computer.

This morning, after a hickup regarding some game settings that apparently got reset ('No, I wanted **** x ***, not 1024 x 768', and 'No, I did not want windowed settings, silly computer'), I loaded up another lesson make sure all was still working. And it was, except for my pause and TC buttons.
I guess the problem isn't really that the game won't unpause, it's just that it keeps pausing. :88) No matter how many times I hit Backspace the game keeps on hitting it right back, and the keyboard shortcuts for TC don't work at all. When I manually click on the TC + button, the game pauses again.

I did a quick search, but I couldn't find any other posts on this 'feature', and I'm pretty fed up with it by now. ;)

As I said, I'm running SH4 gold edition on Vista. FWIW, I installed the game on an external drive that I normally use with my own computer, which runs XP. I dunno if that could cause any problems, but I noticed that after installing the game on the external drive no shortcuts for the game showed up in the Start menu.

Anyways, thanks for reading all this, hopefully it wasn't too confusing...

I know there are a lot more SH4 vets around here that can give you a better idea of a game-specific problem than I can, but from the viewpoint of someone who has spent the better part of their life as the nerdy gamer sort, it sounds an awful lot like it was just a repeating keystroke, specifically whatever you have as your 'TC Down' key. Every once in awhile, an application will get terribly confused and continually think a key is active, and my first impression would be that SH4 is convinced you're constantly mashing the - key. If this is the case, restarting the game should fix it, if not, try and hit the - key (by default, or whatever your TC down input is if you've rebound it) once or twice in-game to see if it registers a key release.

Someone may come along with a specific problem/solution they've encountered in the game before, in which case I'd defer to them since this is all coming from my experience with other games, but it's entirely possible it was just an application hiccup. Hope you get it worked out either way! :salute:

I've encountered a similar issue with the free camera. When pressing the keypad "7" or "1" keys for camera UP/DOWN respectively, sometimes the keystroke becomes "continuous", and it's really difficult to make it stop. I am sorry, I do not know a way to avoid this, but maybe what I'm pointing out is a known issue and someone gives an answer that can be applied to your case.

ok first, im not sure if you know this but windows 7 and vista have some issues with administrator permission so you cant install the game in the programs directory and should create a "games" directory in "c" drive

if you think you screwed up the game settings just delete the sh4 folder in your documents folder, it has all the game settings, video settings, and saved games in it. running the game will create a new sh4 folder with all default settings to start over new again.

Yeah I'd read about the Program Files issues, so I installed SH4 in 'Games/etc' on my F drive.

I honestly hadn't thought about the keystroke issue, I'll check that out next time I can. Thanks again!

Edit: Well, the keys weren't sticking (The TC shortcuts just didn't work period), but deleting the SH4 folder fixed it, somehow. I'd try to figure out why but I'm trying to straighten out my fever at the moment  I don't suppose any of you know what the magic file[s] is [are]?
