I'm a newbie. I am on my 12th patrol. Doing fairly well actually but some things just don't make sense. I have looked around the forum but think it's better if I swallow my pride and ask the questions directly.

1. Do aircraft report your position?

2. Is there a trick to shooting down enemy aircraft as I cannot do it? I’ve had the best luck by just assigning a gunner to do it for me.

3. I’m a bit confused about the pinging the destroyer does on me… If I hear the pinging does that mean he knows where I am? I thought one would hear an echo or bounce back but… maybe better stated is, how do I know if destroyer knows my position?

4. What’s with the hull damage even on a simple low depth dive? Ridiculous! Is there a patch/cheat/fix for it?

5. Also, what’s with all the stuff breaking on a simple dive to 16 meters?I was constantly repairing stuff and hull percentage went down and down. It finally stopped with I went to Periscope depth (12meters). It drove me nuts and angered me as it was ridiculous! Is there a patch/cheat/fix for it?

6. Finally, I remember reading that you could cheat and find out where the capital ships are hiding by using Mission Editor even though you are playing Career Mode but I must be doing something wrong as I Mission Editor cannot even see my career file. Is this possible and what are the steps to perform this? I know, I know, it's cheating but I would like a crack at a capital ship.

You sure you weren't scraping along the sea floor? You will take damage from that in stock, even if you're stationary and just sitting quietly on the bottom you'll continue to take damage.
I think it's GWX3.0 which includes a small mod to remove the "feature" of the boat taking damage while in contact with the seabed - provided you don't slam into it at full speed on a crash dive, of course.

Not sure about your other questions, sorry.

1. Yep, all enemy units will call for help when they spot you, any unit within range (aircraft or ship) will zero in on your position.

2. It just takes practice, remember to aim ahead of the planes track. But to be honest your better off just diving rather than fighting it out with aircraft.

3. Usually if you can hear a slow pinging the DD hasnt really detected you, its only when the ping becomes louder and faster that he has your position, usually at this point he will start an attack run, depending on the date the sonar may not be able to determine your depth accuratly so diving deeper should save your skin.

4. Not sure about this one, which sub are you using?? With a type7/9 you should be able to manage 160-180m easilly. A type 2 cracks at about 120m if i remember, if you use sh3commander the depth is randomised slightly.

5. Its sounding as though your pressure hull has been damaged before diving. Were you attacked before you dived??

6. Open editor, goto file and select open scripted layer, navigate to data/campaign/campaigns/Campaign_SCR.mis this will show all scripted campaign traffic for the entire war.

Thanks for tips! And, I bet I was ' scraping along the sea floor?' because it was at an entrance to harbor, not much depth there. I will be more careful next time and see what happens.

Also, I am going to try to go to 180m with my Sub IX as just got it!

Thanks much! - Rick

If your intent on 'cheating' try the SpySat mod for GWX3....most traffic is on view permanently.

That black font is hard to read.

1. Yes they do. Also, when you radio in the enemy near friendly shores the Luftwaffe will sometimes show up and help you sink them.

2. You need to learn how to 'lead' them, shooting ahead of them so the plane and the bullets arrive at the same place at the same time. That said, your gunners should be better at it than you, as the captain didn't usually man the guns and wasn't trained to.

3. The pinging simply means he is looking for you with active sonar, and doesn't actually know where you are. When the pinging gets faster and you hear his propellors approaching, then it's time to panic.

4. and 5. Answered better than I could.

6. The Mission Editor Campaign files show everything that's in the game, even if you don't have a campaign going at the time. Your personal career files shouldn't show up in the Editor.
