This thread is to list members who are no longer active here. Remember them with a post. Some lost interest. Some left in a huff after a spell in the brig for acting out. Some ... just vanished in the Bermuda Triangle... Where are they now?

Yeah...I've been wondering about Drebbel's absence for awhile.

Some left in a huff after a spell in the brig for acting out.

I have a feeling that's what happened to SUBMAN1 as well. ;)

Interesting.

A few of those members were relatively active in the community up until those points in time.

STEED, Drebbel, CCIP, Penelope_Grey for example are a few i remember who had something to say here every single day.

I'm not sure why... but "Penny" is not listed on the roster at the Grey Wolves Lair either.

At least not that i was able to find.

Perhaps Jimbuna or Kpt. Lehmann know what happened to her?

I was wondering what happened to "Penny", too. I enjoyed reading her posts long before joining. Seemed like a realy neat girl.

STEED did say "Good bye".

Well its time to say good bye to you all, after having a bit of a think at the weekend and the time is right now to move on and close the door behind me. Its been a blast people but all good things must end and today is that day. So I bid you all farewell and remember the secret to life is to bang the rocks together. :D

This is STEED signing off for the very last time. :ping:

Good bye everyone. :sunny:

I actually wondered what happened to Captain Cox.
The first thing I did on this website was downloading some of his mods. :hmm2:

avonlady went in a huff for being brigged for basically lauching nukes at anyone who disagreed with her.

Subman1 did the same after being brigged for spamming multiple topics about how Obama is bad.

STEED, I know he wasn't brigged but I got the impression he went off in a huff too about something.

The others apart from CCIP, drebbel and Gizzmoe I don't know what they did.

Penelope Grey left The Grey Wolves a month or so back.

In a recent TS conversation with KL he informed me the leaving was on good terms but brought about due to the pressures of RL committments.

Boy did he deserve it too. He was a jerk. I thought that he crossed the line in a LOT of his posts. I'm willing to bet that he earned the "Subsim World Reccord" for being on the most people's "Ignore" lists.

I must say that I was on good terms with all of them, including Subman1, he personally helped resolve a few of my computer problems!:hmmm:
Hope they come back, Silent Hunter V may resurrect some, there are others like JCWolf, Venatore, Redwine, that poke their heads in from time to time waiting to see what SH5 will be like to mod!! I predict a return of a few!:yep:

I always saw Avon lady as a strong willed woman.

Steed i think IMHO Subman1 pissed him off so much that he thought better - why stay and stress out, better to move on.

As for subman1 i thought he was always on to it, quick witted, intelligent guy as hard as they come. Last person i would of thought to be upset over a brig time.

Then again it could be just that Real life gets in the way.

You know guys, I don't think that Neal started this with the intention of it becoming a platform for which to publicly berate former members. It's in rather poor taste to speak ill of people who are not here to defend themselves. Also, should those people return, do you not think they would seek reciprocity? I know that I would.

Use PMs, guys.

Also I can't imagine anyone being on good terms with AvonLady.

One had to know how to take her. She certainly did not change her stand easily if somebody had no substantial argument to force her. I had my mild fights but also good talks with her. The trick was not to weigh every tone and word with a gold balance.

She surely was a rich treasure chest of links. :DL The sources where not liked by some people, nevertheless the content not many could argue with.

Personally I considered her leave to be a loss. The last moderator comment was that whereever there was a fire, she was there. But that was true for a lot of people back then, some of them being even louder while having less substantial arguments and references to offer. So that really made me frown, and I almost expected her to react the way she did.

*sniff* I'm actually rather touched that you folks noticed me missing

Thanks again for remembering me - I didn't forget either :)

I hope the others on the list are fine as well. Hopefully we can have more of us return safe :yep:

What's also scary is how many other members should be on there.

Example, Nobody knows me. My wife wouldn't bother posting on here. If I fell over dead , nobody here would know, and being a newer member, I would be surprised if more than a couple cared. Not saying you guys are cold hearted just that I'm new.

I wonder how many other members, regular or transients, would be on this list.

Lets just say I came to the realization that absolutly nothing is accomplished by discussing certain topics here as everyone is more or less set in their beliefs and will not be swayed.

Besides I usually try not to rely on heresay, yep Ive made some mistakes. But all in all it doesent matter anyhow.

It's not the quantity or the time on board, but the quality of the posting that matters. You would indeed be missed.

That's not entirely true.

You see, part of the complex code built into this forum software by my golfing buddies from NASA includes a custom "HAL-matrix". All members here are scaled by their contributions to the intellectual discussions--the content of their posts and comments builds their HAL score within the system. Once you have made enough witty, helpful, funny (Cat thread posts actually subtract from the total, I think), or insightful posts, your HAL score reaches a certain threshold. From that point on the program's IdM system hooks up with your school records, job status, phone accounts, doctor's records, and FBI files if you happen to live in the UK (not sure why about that last bit). (No, we don't bother with your bank accounts, none of you have any real money anyway :O:). The SUBSIM system actually knows how you are, if you're alive or not, if you are naughty or nice (on license from You-know-who).

If a beer truck hits you, or you keel over dead from too much fatty foods, we know it. Flowers are sent to your next of kin.

Frau was having problems logging onto SubSim at home, so I don't know if she was able to resolve that. Also, since it is summer she may be on vacation.

I wish I was on vacation, lol.

The problems getting to the site were resolved, it was something to do with my router not recognizing the URL and/or or IP address as valid after something was changed with the servers or something, I dunno. Anyway one of dLink's "services" was redirecting me to a Yahoo search page instead of bringing me here. Found out about it after doing a bit of searching online and opted out of the "service" (which I suspect is a clever way for them to make money by redirecting people to Yahoo instead of letting their search engine of choice handle any such isssues) and it's been fine since then.

But "Real Life" is kinda kicking my butt at the moment so I think I'm coping by just tuning out of anything and everything that used to be part of my normal routine and immersing myself in what felt like mindless time-wasting stuff instead. Getting back into the groove now, though, or at least trying to.

The good news is we finally closed on mom's house a couple weeks ago, once the money was in the trust account we were able to sit down and figure out how much to leave in for the few remaining expenses (not much) and who got how much of the rest. We will still have money coming in from the sale of personal property - furniture is being auctioned, and we're having a yard sale this weekend, ugh - but the house was the bulk of the inheritance.

I got my share last week and took it straight to the bank. Sat down last night and paid off... everything I owe everybody, basically. By the time the banks close tomorrow I should be 100% debt free for the first time in a long time, with enough left over for a sizeable down payment on my own home. :sunny:

The bad news is that the whole ordeal plus what's to come has my head spinning, just the idea of getting appproved for a loan and finding a place and buying it and moving... argh. Most of that I've never done before, which is daunting, and the moving I've done often enough to know what a PITA it is. :O:

I keep going on line to look at info and real estate listings and stuff for first time home buyers and after a couple hours my brain is just overloaded and then I can't sleep and I have to get up and go to work the next day and everybody is all "Are you looking at condos yet? Are you are you ARE YOU ARE YOU?" and I don't even want to think about it because when I do that I think about all the stuff that I will have to do which in reality will happen over a period of time but in my head it's all kinda just "there" in a huge pile of things to be done and it's overwhelming so I don't want to deal with it. :dead:

Anyway... I actually have looked at some listings online and drove by a couple places this afternoon after work that seemed interesting, so that's something. By the end of next month I will know what kind of money I will have for living expenses and bills now that I have no outstanding debts to worry about, and that will help me get me head on straight about what's possible when it comes to buying a property.

Nice to see you around, Frau. I knew you'd been here and there on Subsim but thought you'd just got lost in Skyrim. Hope it all gets better for you.

On the debt free front, I got debt free about four years ago and have managed to stay there. It's not easy sometimes, but I think worth it, I wish I'd managed it earlier.

Just consider this place your very own 'time wasting stuff'.

Nice to see you around, Frau. I knew you'd been here and there on Subsim but thought you'd just got lost in Skyrim.

Oh, I don't play Skyrim any more.

Not since I learned how to mod it. (KILL ME NOW. :wah: )

It's actually interesting, one of the time-wasters I got stuck on was modding the player houses. It was like the whole idea of finding and buying and making a home out of a real house is just too much to handle, so I'll spend hours moving an imaginary crate of imaginary mushrooms around an imaginary room in an imaginary house in an imaginary world until it looks JUST PERFECT. Because, dammit, at least I can finish that and then check it off my list and move on.

Not that I've stopped modding, of course. Or playing. Once I get the houses how I want them I'll start a new character. But I need to not use it as an escape from everything else, and that means not letting everything else get too overwhelming.

Hope it all gets better for you.

Oh, it'll be fine. Didn't mean to make it sound like I'm in terribly bad shape, I'm okay, but I'm the kind of person who needs to think things through and wrap my head around new stuff in a very precise and methodical fashion, and the potential for all this change and uncertainty all hitting at once was a bit much. I just need to slow it down and take it one step at a time instead of worrying about stuff that's not gonna happen until a lot of other things happen first.

On the debt free front, I got debt free about four years ago and have managed to stay there. It's not easy sometimes, but I think worth it, I wish I'd managed it earlier.

I am really looking forward to the end of next month, lol, I can't remember the last time I wasn't making a payment every month on SOMETHING. I know I will be sitting there thinking, where did all this extra money come from? OH RIGHT. :O:

The hard part will be, behaving myself and socking a good bit away for moving expenses and whatnot instead of going out and splurging on something stupid. I will have some for splurging and I think one self-indulgent expense is justifiable,* just can't let myself go crazy.

*And as it happens the local symphony is doing Beethoven's Ninth in November. So I'm thinking, BOX SEATS BABY. If they're still available when single tickets go on sale next month. Which they won't be, but I can dream. :O:

Thanks all for the warm thoughts.

I bit the bullet last night and hit the "request information" links on 4-5 condos that look promising. I guess I will be hearing from some real estate agents shortly.

Part of the problem is that with the current housing market situation, the number of suitable properties for sale is just outrageous. It would be easier if there were less to choose from, lol. OTOH it does let me have a few dealbreakers without narrowing down the possibilities too much.

Thanks for the info and the links, Frau. I am very impressed with the venue; I have heard of Springer Auditorium mainly through the classical music radio stations I listen to and the recordings they play that were made in Springer. I had never seen pictures of the interior; it is one of those places just made for fine musical performances and I have always been partial to grand, historic architecture...

I have seen the 9th performed live several times, mainly here in Los Angeles. A couple of the performances were at the Music Center downtown at the Chandler Pavillion, but the acoustics there are not among the best. I have yet to see a performance at the newer Disney Hall. I have also seen the 9th at the Hollywood Bowl a few times, but, since it is a outdoor venue, the sound tends to dissipate the further from the Bowl stage one sits. One of the best performances I have ever seen was not by a world-class orchestra in a prominent venue. Several years ago, a local church hosted a performance by a lesser known orchestra and vocalists. The church is in the gothic style both inside and out and the interior has some very fine acoustics. The setting was perfect for the piece and to see and hear a performance that wasn't sort of coated with the patina of an "elite" event gave the whole piece a "humaness" I found lacking in the almost clockwork precision of the "pros". There is someting to hearing the sound of the orchestra and voices performing such a grand composition resonating in the naves and alcoves of a gothic church. Maybe it has something to do with all those Latin High Masses I attended while in Catholic school...

I hope you plans work out and you enjoy the glorious 9th...

Yeah, it's really quite lovely. I've sat in various sections from orchestra (floor) to gallery (upper balcony) and even had box seats once for an opera and the sound seems great everywhere.

I have seen the 9th performed live several times,

I'm sorry, but I must hate you now. :O:

...

Oh, I will definitely be going. Single tickets go on sale in a couple of weeks and I already have the money... I'd just do one of the "create your own series" deals and pick out 5 shows now but there doesn't seem to be an option for choosing your own seat that way, which is something I really prefer to do. I waited until November last year to get tix for last season because none of the performances I wanted to see were happening until after the first of this year, and still got great seats for all three.

They are also doing the Emperor concerto next spring, and Pinchas Zuckerman will be in town one weekend, I think he may be doing the two romanzas for violin and orchestra but I'm not sure. Those are the other two performances I will probably get tickets for (at the very least).

They actually will do three performances of the 9th, instead of the usual two, one of which will be (as I understand it) a rehearsal performance the Thursday evening before the weekend shows. I may try to get in on that as well just to see what it's like.

And as it happens, I was just now listening to a live performance of the 9th from the Royal Albert Hall in London, which was apparently timed to end shortly before the opening ceremonies of the Olympics begin today. Thank goodness I work in an office downstairs by myself away from everybody else, I'm not sure they could've endured me singing along so loudly in German no less. :dead:

This thread seems morbid.

I get the purpose, maybe to goad a response from well missed friends/forum-mates. Or find out from RL friends, just what is up.

But it kinda highlights forum attrition, and it scares me.

Makes ya think...."Who's next?"

I am sad now...

I am going to warmly welcome the new members now!

Anyone know about Rockin Robbins. I think his last post was 10/12, although it appears he signed on last back in 2/13.

There's always some forum attrition. This thread helps recognize members we remember and miss.

Yes, he posted one or two things a few months ago. He used to post a lot. His posts were always well written and interesting to read.

I've noticed that the activity in the SH4 section, seems to be down a lot compared to what it was a couple years ago.

There's no set time period for anyone to be listed here. Mainly it's just when a member who is missed, has been away without explanation, and someone misses him.
