I'm playing with GWX3.0, including the 16km atmosphere mod, and I want to wean myself off the map contact icons. Is there any special technique to hydrophone hunting? What process do others use?
Whenever I detect a vessel on 'phones, I seem to end up chasing shadows and getting frustrated without the lines to guide me. Is there a particular trick to it? Do I just need to keep diving regularly to take new sound readings?

There are several techniques to do this. I usually do hydrophone sounding every 20km, traveling at 2knots. There is a video out there somewhere in the download section...I think. The video in itself shows how to do hydrophone tracking by using all of the map tools. Very interesting. I have been able to make it work a few times. Granted, it is tough, but if you get 1 kill with this type of method, it is very rewarding. See link of basically the same question. Look up the name "Nefelodamon"

Using this tool (handheld 'sliderule' calculator) you can atleast figure out the AOB (in the past) and from that it's course.

You could use it in coordination/as confirmation with Nefelodamon's movie tutorial (link below). His method is more complete in that it figures out course, speed and range. But you should be patient, as long periods pay in accuracy.

Here is another one by Mittelweachter, similar to the link above. Nefelodamon was inspired by this to make his own tutorial.
