can i possibly take out small ships with my deck gun? i know i can take out elco torpedo boats :P but what about merchants?

Your deck gun is plenty powerful enough to sink/destroy any merchant you come across.

keep an eye out for those that are armed though.

Your Flak guns are powerful enough to take out any of the coastal vessel group of ships, except perhaps the tugboat.

Always aim for the waterline though, or it'll take looong, if at all.

The heavier flak guns are good for removing enemy armaments from any ships you can't sink outright. ;)
