Sorry, I got this posted the wrong place, please move to GT section...

For a long time, I have yearned to see some real heavy snow weather again. And it has been snowing outside today. We have about 10-25 cm of snow right now, here in Odense. I hope there will be some in Copenhagen too, to calm down all the heavy decisions they have to make at the COP15.

Here's a shot of my bike before I had to leave today, and here's another from the forest I had to pass.
The photos have been made with my mobile phone. I have to get out and make some more photos with my DSLR camera again tomorrow... I was just out this evening, and I will post some more later...

JUST BEAUTIFULL :yeah:

Exactly, it's very beautiful, the snow. I really like it, that is in the winter time...
I have just been out for a couple of hours to make some photos, and I'll go out again tomorrow in the daylight to get some there too. Will try and post some of those photos later.
If any of you get snow in your area, feel free to post some photos too.

We've got a small dusting of the stuff, probably won't get much more than that I'd reckon because of the salt air. Inland will probably get more...and then the entire United Kingdom shuts down for the rest of the year. :damn:

Expecting 10cm tomorrow, first snow of the year. I'm actually keeping an eye on the weather-radar in anticipation. :)

I'll take out the camera if I get a chance. Right on the coast here; any snow that falls usually doesn't last long. :(

Nice shots thanks for sharing.:salute:

It's beginning to look like Christmas :yeah:

Down here we havent seen the sun or the stars (grrr) since last week. Lots of rain, freaky foggy conditions.

LOL weather channel made me laugh... "Dew point 66F, Current temprature 66F" :o

Then we had days of 100% RH with temps hovering above freezing.

It's been weird this year. Usually there is a pattern... It gets cold and clears up, then it warms and clouds up then rains, rinse ... repeat.

Well, I have naturally a hope to have it as an extra job one day, and yes, that's why I mark my photos with my webadress. Feel free to pay the site a visit. I have my photo site as an online portfolio, as reference if anyone interested in using me as photographer can check out my talents.

I actually did sell one photo last February to my local newspaper, but the photo director cheated me, because I was unaware of the rates. I checked later. He should have paid me more. Or rather, I should have demanded more. Anyway, it taught me a lesson. I know that now for the next time.

Very nice although I can't really say it's anything I don't see every winter, especially coming from the north of Finland. :) I think this is a cold spell that originates from Siberia or something.

I like those German-style houses, don't know what they are called. And the shots with depth perception. Denmark looks nice, haven't visited but would like to.

Having worked at a newspaper I know that it's always good to consult some of the other photographers, to get info about rates. It's best if one can get in as a 'house photographer' as opposed to as a freelancer. I can see you have skills so anything is possible.

We had snow strangely early (December 5th, I think) here in the D.C. area, but it melted pretty quickly, like it normally does. On balance, this is a warm climate.

Right now it's 23 degrees F./ -5 C. w/the windchill, outside.

It's no winter-wonderland, but with a coat of snow it's actually bearable to look at. Even enjoyable to walk through: nothing like the crunching of fresh snow under your feet, placing the first prints before the hoards of other feet turn it into slush.

Great pics. I love visiting the snow. Only a few hours drive from here but it almost never snows here. (Last time was in 1968)

What if we don't get snow? Can we post pics?

Yesterday I went fishing wearing shorts, flip flops, and a tank top. Might do the same today. It's clear blue sky, supposed to be 70° F (21° C), light ocean breeze. Sounds like a great day for fishing. Just saw the High Surf Advisory, might just go surfing instead.

I hope y'all enjoy the snow. :)

My friend left Aalborg over the weekend and hasn't returned yet.
I hope he got a long run down to the warm countries, and isnt stuck in this someplace.
Even more so, I hope both he and his truck (a fairly new Man) are OK.

I was wondering, it's strange when looking at things such as the consistency of snow somewhere else and it looks different. I wonder if I'm just imagining this. Obviously things such as soil and vegetation like grass differ from one place to another but isn't snow a 'constant' meaning it's supposed to be the same everywhere around the planet?

OTH, I think the air temp at time of snowfall has a dramatic affect on the consistancy of the snow. For me it is usually wet and heavy because the temps hover around 32-35. Colder regions it is like powder.

I agree with AVGWarhawk, I think that what you mean depends on temperature.

The first snow of end november/early december looks like pictures in Oberon's post #63, it's cute & romantic, but when it gets colder it looks like more my previous post (#59).

Pics in my previous post had been taken in early march 2008, it was a record year, that winter we had more than 500 cm of snow.. but usually it's around 325 cm.

So far we have about 10 inches, they are saying we will have between 16 and 20 by morning. I live out a good ways - which I love - but with that much snow - thawing and refreezing - I will be lucky if I can get out monday.

You're on the east coast of the U.S.?

We in D.C. are going to get NAILED with 14-20 inches/ .35-.50 M. of snow over this weekend.

If you really get this or if you ever travel to the north, never underestimate the use of good winter tires, they are of a critical importance, trust me.

If snow in D.C. doesn't stay enough long, and you don't want to invest on tires, be extremely careful, I know very well how bad it can be.

Méo

Oh I forgot,

Without winter tires, avoid steep slope at all cost, try to take another way event if it's much longer.

And if you guys have a 4X4, ok it can be very cool in snowy condition, but remember, when the time has come to brake, it doesn't make any difference.

I think that's all for my tips. :DL

My kids are done for school until after the 1st of the new year. It worked out for them. Problem is, this snow will paralyze the state of Maryland for weeks on end. It is really sad the amount of snow fairies here. Heck, 1/2 inch of snow will paralyze the state. If Maryland got snow like you most would just breakdown and cry for hours on end. Not only that, I have some more Christmas shopping to do. Today was a wash and tomorrow will not be much better. A lot of folks will be bum rushing the malls come Monday. Fortunate I have just a few things left. I shop like I'm on a mission anyway so it is all good. :D

If you decide to go on a shopping mission, here some (again!) tips:

- Snow Brush are a must!

- Keeping a small shovel in your car can be a good idea.

- Bringing a buddy with you is also a good idea! (if jammed, one pushes the gas pedal while the other pushes the car).

- Traction aid are great too.

- Avoid steep slope, the smoother the tilt, the better it is.

And don't do the same as those guys!!! :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLw7C3w7c0A

He's gently ribbing folks from warmer climates who are unable to cope with even minimal amounts of snow.

Up here in the cold weather states it takes a foot of snow just to get school canceled for the day, over a foot to start closing businesses and two or more feet before non essential services shut down. Down in the south it seems that a general panic sets in at about 1 inch of snow.

It is, the worst is not the temperature, it's the wind.

I don't mind going outside at -15°C when it's calm.

But when it's -15°C with 40 km/h (and even more) winds this is really awful. :damn:

Powder snow + wind = deathtrap. It blows up against the curbs: 1 second you're trudging through 10cm of snow, the next you're tripping over something.

Had more, but because it was still dark, the longer exposure and me not being able to keep the camera still produced some horrible blur. :nope:

As for the average, it depends. Here it's just a few days a year, if at all. Further East (further from the coast) gets more snow. With that first snowfall, we got something like 5 cm, while it reached 40-50cm in the east, particularly north-east saw some heavy snow. I'd say average conditions are 10-15cm per year (probably double further inland), lasting about a week, 2 at most, untill the temperature goes above freezing again. The snow we got today is probably gone tonight, as temperatures should climb to +2C today.

Okay, these are relatively snowy photos taken in Poland back in October (In quite a few places whose long, complicated names I don't even bother trying to remember, though the first one was probably somewhere in the vicinity of Radom). Unfortunately, I don't have pictures of the nastiest snow, because I happened to be wearing nothing thicker than a paper-thin rainjacket at the time and running around like that for about 4 hours in the ~-5-0 degrees C tempratures and completely soaking in the snow didn't leave me many chances to snap pictures (Can't say it wasn't fun though :O:).

No, seriously, most of us live approximately where our parents put us into the world. Would many of us really move away because of the weather?

I like the snow, in wintertime. The frost, ice and snow kill a lot of the bugs, which otherwise will be like the plaigue in summer time. And besides, it can be very beautiful. So far, I have liked to see all your snow photos from around the Northern Earth. I am however very impressed with some of the quantities of Canada. :o

So do/did any of you then have a white Christmas?
Denmark, so it seems on my train ride through the country still had some snow left here and there. You could see some of the field grass through the snow, but the fields are still a bit covered. If the official score about having obtained 90% snow coverage nationally is reached, I don't know, but we had/have some snow around my parents house.

Anyway, have a merry Christmas all of you. :yeah:

Fantastic shots there Carotio! :salute:

Sadly no white Christmas this year, unless it's snowing right now. The rain dispersed all the snow we had, but maybe next year! :ping:
Scotland looks like it might get a white one though.

Aye, last one was in '97. The longest period between 2 of them in the past was 12 years, one in 1917 followed by the next in 1929.

Seems like we'll be breaking that record... :(

Kind of, but it really doesn't snow much in Salt Lake City. We're at the very edge of a desert.

On the other hand we're also at the very foot of some high mountains, so we have seven world-class ski resorts all one half-hour drive from the city and forty-five minutes from the airport.

Well, we've had some more since Christmas although it's been a strange kind of snow, mostly hail more than snow but it sticks around and forms a layer like snow. Of course, then it partially melts during the day and then freezes solid at night when we drop below zero. Which makes the early morning walk to work a veritable Dancing on Ice.
At least the roads are usually clear, so I just walk on them, the pavements are lethal. It's a miracle that no-one has sued the council yet.

Still, at least someone is enjoying it ;)

Oh the hype in the media about this weather "disaster" and how catastrophic it all is.

Memory of man does not hold for long, it seems.

It is a winter like it was considered normal in my childhood and early teen years. Yes, we have had 20 cm of snow past weekened, and another 20 cm is heading our way, North-West of Germany, close to the dutch border. Lowest night temperature we have had here was around -17°C. Big deal.

In Germany, 2009 has nevertheless been the third warmest year in history, with unusually much precipitation, and globally the past decade has been the warmest decade since at least 200,000 years.

Oh indeed, what we have here is nothing compared to what we had back in Kent during the late '80s, there's a picture in a photo album somewhere of me aged about four or five standing on our cleared garden pathway with the snow higher than me (well over a meter)!

I remember the 80'ies and 90'ies well too, and specifically in the 80'ies we always had snow during the winter. I don't have photos around, they are at my parents house, but we had lots of snow to play with: snowmen, caves, snowball fights etc. The reason many freak out about it, is probably because we haven't really seen much snow in the last decade during the winters. But I love it, it's like a reminder of my childhood.
