It is 1943 and my Type IXC has returned from patrolling the far south shipping lanes between Montevideo and Capetown (Hmm, I have actually been to both of those cities IRL)
57K tons and I head home.
Next patrol and I try the route between Brazil and Freetown Africa. at 37K I save the game run another 48 hours at 2048TC and save again at the end of July.
Next day I go to start and CTD. So, I try the one save before and CTD.

I put it aside to look at the Doc file later (never have been able to fix it that way but WTH) and play some CoDWaW that evening.

Next day while online on my other (this) PC I decide to fire up the game PC and run a test.
Starting at the last patrol (erasing the 37K tons i earned) I decided to run out into the Atlantic, make a couple saves, exit the game, restart the PC and see what happens.
I wondered if I had used a save name already used the patrol before (I save like this P24S1, P24S2) so If I mistakenly forgot this was the next patrol and reused the last numbered one maybe that was why CTD.
It is just a test and i will restart that patrol from base but I just wanted to test the name I had saved.
I quickly routed the U-Boat through Lorient and out to sea and then swicthed over to my email stuff.
The sound was still on the SH3 PC and heard mein Gott and switched over to see U-boat sunk by collision.

Now, this was just a test but I have a rule about these things. It does not matter how why or any excuse DiD even in a case like this.
I would always feel I cheated if I made any exception so this career is over but , man, what a sad way to end it.
Had I (carefully) plotted the course like I always do (around the slow escort) this would not have happened but alas, I did it and that is that.

Back to 1939 all over again!

Personally, I would have kept on with the career as you had decided previously that this trip was for testing purposes. That was a premeditated decision, so it's not like you started a patrol, died and said, 'oh, we'll call that a test then...'. I also admire you for upholding the DiD tradition but feel you didn't deserve this one, as the game made you do it!!

Of course, if you think there's a possibility that you would have continued the patrol as normal if the save had worked, then yes, you should be dead. It's a bit of a paradox that one...

Enjoy the 'happy times'.

I agree that you should have continued the career. If I save in shallow water and reloading gets me flashing lights, overwhelming damage and a Death Screen for no apparent reason, the the game has cheated, not me.

Dead Is Dead means getting killed legitimately, whether through the enemy's good tactics or my own stupidity, but loading the wrong file? I too admire your strictness to your code, but if you didn't load it up intending to play, yew wuz robbed!

My careers will not be like Barry Bonds' with an asterisk.

I understand the logic but here is why DiD even when I run a test.

Live is not fair.
Sometimes we sink a ship and the game does not credit us.

Sometimes in real life U-Boats sank by collision with a reef a friendly ship or running a simple test.

Fact is I did not set a careful course so I am responsible for a test even if it was to examine why I could not load my saves. I do believe that was caused by me reusing a same save name from the previous patrol, another fault of mine that led to CTD that led to a test that led to improper plotting that led to the demise of my U-Boat.

If someone else did this and continued i would not trash that decision as it has merit. But, this is my standard.
Absolutely positively DID no if ands or buts about it.

However, I have to say this one bites like no other but its on me.:wah:

Mein U-Boat ist Gestorben!!!

Personally I would have continued with the career,I think some people while true to the DiD ethic, and I admire that they do:up: Don't make allowances for modern everyday life.
Computers do stupid things, software goes Fubar, all manner of things that would of course never happen to a real U-boat Kaleun, nobody is going to ring him on a mobile:doh: and of course he doesn't have the benefit of TC,or its resulting hazards:o
while being killed in genuine game action results in a accepted DiD,I think some personal leeway should be accepted as well when it comes to us Bedroom Kaleuns:salute: I've been personally sunk by my cat!!!!:haha::wah::har: I didn't feel the least bit guilty about restarting that patrol!:03:

I still respect your decision, but I'll add in a little here. When you went below to "work on your reports" (check email, etc) you as Kaleun would have turned over the con to the OOD - presuming you DID leave an Officer on the bridge. He would have reacted to the situation, and in all probability avoided the collision. Now if it was an aircraft sinking you - DiD, the lookouts didn't spot it soon enough, or something.

And just outta curiousity - was this in shallow water (chance of that escort saving you and yer crew) or in deep water? IOW does "out to sea" mean off the continental shelf, or just outta the harbor and a wee bit more?

Yeah, maybe it's best to go down with your boat than face the taunts and mocking of all the Kriegsmarine, especially if one of them uploaded a vid to YouTube....
