THis is my first time playing a subsim since Silent Service on my Amstrad 464 back in the 90s so forgive my noobness.

In my 2nd patrol out of Brisbane in S-47, on the way north towards the Solomons and the invasion of Guadalcanal, I found myself amid a USN taskforce, including a carrier. Still being close to Oz and a couple of miles from said carrier I was quite happy to run on the surface, even when my radar detected an airborne contact that was going to pass to the north of me, assuming it was a from the carrier.

Wrong! It was a Zero that turned on me before I realised and could dive. Anyway, took some damage astern and almost entire crew wounded. Flooded engine room and damaged batteries and diesels. Eventually got it all fixed and water pumped out, but my boat was still running underwater at a 30 degree bow angle-up, and anything less than flank resulted in her slowly sinking down.......so I surface and decide to head for home.

Except my engines won't run. I just sat there. So despite everything being fixed on the damage screen, I couldn't move on the surface couldn't run straight underwater.

What gives? Was I doing something wrong? Is there more serious damage that doesn't show up on the damage screen?

Thx

Were the engines RED in the compartment? If so then they were destroyed and won't appear in the box at the bottom because they can't be repaired. A bad thing about stock SH4 is the Diesels can be destroyed very easy. If they were not destroyed then all i can think of is your fuel tanks were ruptured and bled out into the ocean. That has happened to me before and sadly its game over at that point because there is no way to call for a tow back to port. :damn:

BTW Welcome!

You're experiencing a well know problem with the S class boats. There's a compartment in the damage model that once flooded kills the engines. This compartment can not be de-watered either. I think, but I'm not sure, that the super mods may have addressed this issue.

Thanks for that

Were the engines RED in the compartment?

No, I had that on my first career - left stranded in Yokahama bay after trying to duke it out on the surface with 2 Sub-chasers! I'm learning very quickly the do's and don'ts of submarine warfare. Its like the old adage about the rules of aviation being written in the blood of dead men....

One of the other things I've found, any time I get ANY damage the first thing I check is do I still have a rudder? If the rudder gets blown off you can't turn, so unless you're pointed directly at home base you might as well quit and reload a save game. :damn:
