A movie of an octopus using the shell of a coconut to build himself an armoured home. The scientist said that it looked to funny when the animal took the things and started to walk away" that he never had laughed that much under water.
It is offcoast of Indonesia.
Formally, it is not only the use of a tool, but planning ahead and demonstrating an intention that aims at the use of a tool in the future, not just for immediate use.
fascinating animals, though due to our inability to read their emotions and intentions from their body language, the knowledge of that beak hidden in the middle of their body always makes me nervous. Although only one octopus is known to have a poison lethal for man, I still do not want to get bitten by something that can easily pull a chunk of meat out of my body and is powerful enough to even can cut through my bones. But fascinating animals, very curious, and highly intelligent (it did not need this video to tell us that).

Ya they are pretty smart creatures, I remember reading about some tests, where they had learned how to open jars to get at food inside. Here is a vid of that.

Yes, I have read that these creatures are quite smart. My amazement with the octopus is the ability to change skin pigament to blend in. It is simply uncanny. Sometimes change the entire color to partial on one side from the the other side. Ability to change colors in a second. Imagine if we could do that! :o

The thing that amazes me about these creatures is the tiney holes they can slip through. Evidently the only limiting factor is that beak that was mention. Apparently if that beak can fit through the hole the whole damn octopus can fit.

I read this story this morning and just saw the video on the news. I think it is so cool how they can manipulate objects like that. That is sure one fascinating creature. :yeah:

I thought is was a whisker deal like cats. If the whiskers do not brush the sides of the whole the animal will fit. :hmmm:

Now if we can teach them to write code, we are set. And the best part is, they are tastey:woot:.

Rats have a flexable back-bone that gives them much more mobility through tight spaces than even a cat.

I once saw a short clip showing a bit of coral, and about halfway through an octopus suddenly 'unmasked' itself and just shot off. I was shocked at how fast the creature changed colors. :o

They are still limited by their rib cage and shoulder/hip joints. Also major difference in scale, Octopi can get in holes many times smaller then they are

I do remember that clip. The octopus looked EXACTLY like it surroundings. Truely astonishing. Reminds me of the creature in Predator.

Yeah, I forgot to say that it really did look EXACTLY like the object it was on. It was so perfectly camoflaged that it honestly scared the bejazzus out of me when it popped up and swam away. :haha:

I believe I have found it Weiss and the one I remember. This bugger is so well melded into the object. Nothing has a chance.

My jaw officially hit the floor at that octopus in AVGs vid...I mean...I knew they were good...but not that good!! :o:o:o:o

They are very smart indeed I remember watching a documentary where the scientists captured an octopus from the sea and brought it into their boat and put it in an aquarium like container with lid on top so it's sealed.
At night the Octopus opened the lid cover got out from the container and ran out of the boat into the sea :DL.
That one is probably good enough to work in CIA :D or British intelligence...a 007 Octopus lol

Yeah man. To me, the octopus is the ultimate predature. The camo is uncanny.

That's the one! No matter how many times I see it I'm just amazed at how perfectly the little devil perfectly mimics its backround, colors, movement, and all. :o

You mean like this?
A 600 pound octopus shape-shift itself to wriggle through a passageway the size of a quarter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCAIedFgdY0
Another quite cool creature is the Cuttlefish. It can camouflage like octopie, but it also can arrange it's own disco lights. :O:

Don't forget shape too, it altered its shape to look like a gnarled hunk of coral.

So, can we put this animal on the top 10 list of perfect or near perfect predators?
If so, what would the other 9 perfect or near perfect predators would be on the list?

I think we can definitely put the Octopus on the 10 most interesting predators. ;)

The shark could be on this list as well. Hmmmmm....even a trap door spider? Look at this little ambusher.
