Sometimes when I'm external and looking around I hit the speed (shift) key...after that I can never get the cam to stop moving..i.e. it will drift and not stop... any ideas??

Thanks!

Just tap the shift-fwd arrow again or one or the other. It will stop.

If it gets stuck going in one direction I just tap that particular key 2-3 times, and usually that fixes it for me. If not, then Alt-Tab out and back in.

Ah, cool, this happened to me last night and I tried tapping and tap-tapping and tap-tap-tapping all the keys that had anything to do with the external cam as well as dragging the mouse all over the place (the only way I could get it to stop spinning was to click on the screen and "lock" the view to the mouse, which only worked until I had to click to get the cursor back for something else).

Never thought to alt-tab out and/or use the Windows key to drop to desktop. Will try that if it happens again, thanks!

BTW this has only happened the one time to me, and it was only after I'd been using the external view for an extended period of time. I was shadowing a ship I'd hit and I didn't have any torps left and the weather was too rough for the deck guns (no I don't have that mod installed yet), not to mention there was an armed trawler that was poking around back where the attack actually took place and still well within visual contact range. I know I could've just gone and had a nice lie-down and waited for the crew to tell me she was sinking, but it took TWO HOURS and I wasn't sure I'd done enough damage so I spent most of it watching her slowly putter away and saying "I think she's listing more" and "oh well maybe not" and "oh come ON that wave should've totally finished her" and so on. Somewhere around the hour and a half mark the external cam just went wacko.

BUT SHE SANK. So there's that.

I had a problem using Win7 where I was using shift in free view and the keyboard locked up, all I got was a ticking noise for each keystroke.

I couldn't save, go back to Windows, anything. In the end I had to hit the power button, and let the f**cker shut down, losing my patrol...

but this is a Win7 problem, not SH3.

I still use external view a lot (n00b!) but I've never used it for such a prolonged period of time, or switched back and forth from that to another view as much, or done as much moving around in external view as I did this time. Because every time I'd switch to the map or something else and go back "up" I'd have to circle around, find the ship again, then zoom in on it, and following it meant using the arrow keys and mouse to move alongside it or jump this way and that to get the angle I wanted...

Anyway, I figure it was some combination of what I was doing and for how long - or else I hit some odd combination of keys that sent it spinning.
