I saw a merc ship and i fired two torpedoes at him. One torpedo malfunctioned - rudder jammed, and started to go in circles. I wasnt fast enough to realize that and it hit me on rear and it sunked me.
Im sorry for this useless thread but i just had to inform you guys about this!
Do you guys ever experienced something like this before? :rotfl2:

OOOOOO yeah! It's in infamous circle runner. Just look at the bright side. Now you don't have to worry about evasion!:DL

Yep, been noticed and talked about for years. Sorry you missed all the threads on it and had to find out the hard way.

It's not all that rare and will even happen when you're at scope depth. Usually happens when you going at about 1/3 speed. You can even see it late war with M18's. There is a good side, they will often take out DD's making runs over you.
Also have to be careful shooting cuties. They will home in on you if they pick you up and you're not deep enough, but you can also steer them back into targets.
Most the time they don't totally kill you, so you may make it back to base.

As standard practice,, everytime I fire a torp or spread, I jump onto passive sonar to check that the torps are running straight.:D
Thinking of this.. did the subs then not employ this practice as it was always a possibility ?

Yes, someone would report the fish was running "hot, straight and normal."

yea actually something that has always bugged me is that you get no notification of the malfunctioning torpedo unless you use your superpowers and observe the outside world.
You would think the soundman would notice that something was awry and give you some kind of warning.

It's about impossible to take the time to track torps with passive sonar and pull of an attack on a convoy or moreso a TF, worse if you're using a supermod. It would take many seconds to determine that and trying to track several ain't easy as you also need to be at the scope, track targets, ect.
That's a fault of the game. The quicker thing to do is jump to the attack map for a few seconds. Since it's not fair that you do every job, I consider this a fair balance. Even then that takes time, but it shows what all your torps are doing.
Technically a sub can't be stopped underwater without sinking, but if you stop the circle torps usually miss.
Still, the torps hitting you at scope depth is a little strange. I've had em hit me towards the bottom of my sub at scope depth with a setting of 5 ft, that's really running low. I could understand it if I set them at 20 ft.

I happened to see one look like it was circling back(had seen the threads!) so, I crash dived.
A gunboat cruised right over my position and BOOM! He got it but, I didn't get credit for it.
Boy, was I shocked when that sucker blew up!
Gary
I've read that many sub commanders would change depth after firing torpedos to avoid circle runners.
