View Full Version : Invasion of Borneo
Capt Hendry

Hi, long-time lurker (sinker?), first-time poster.
I just had a quick question: I was tasked with delivering supplies to Borneo at the outset of my 1941 Career. After completing my objective I was given carte blanche and decided to hang out near Saigon.
I had just reached the Balabac Strait near Palawan when I received word of the imminent invasion of Borneo by the Japanese. Now I've played many, many careers but, until now, I've never been in the right place.
After wikipedia-ing the Battle of Borneo I discovered that the TF leaves Cam Ranh Bay which is not marked on the map. I'm wondering if I am in the correct position to intercept them. I can't find an image of their actual route but my present position seems logical to me.
I suppose this has been addressed in the past but I'm currently running TMO 1.9 and, though I doubt it was been changed, I am still curious as to which route the group took.

Well, In that space of time I encountered a small convoy with two escorts who jumped all over me. I evaded them for about an hour (realtime) before they caught me and sunk my ass. A fitting end for James T. Kirk...

Japanese forces invaded Borneo in multiple places at multiple times. The invasion force which left Camn Rahn was headed for Miri and then Burnei on Borneo's western coast.
Too bad for Capt. Kirk. I wonder if the Kobayashi Maru was in that convoy. ;)

Hi, im new at this game, still in "tactics and manual" "mod" :D that means "play and learn" i had dloaded lots of tutorials videos, and during game play and i have save game, think, Alt-Tab game to see this great Forums for support, seracihng answers, trying out tactics, tips and etc to fid best solution.
I play 1.4
Started Career in Asiatic fleet on 92 realism, dificulty setings Normal, its now 11,Dec 1941 ingame
big things happening.
Started 2,Dec 1941 apointed very first mission to patrol, SW of Manila - aprox 120E13N.
was no enemie activity, after mission complete was appointed to patrol Luson Strait aprox 122E 22N, so ploted course there from previous point to reach aponted destination in Luson Strait, basicly my course was NNE
now serdainly it all became crazy and became hell in one day:
*11 of Dec, 1941, 8AM. aprox 119E 17N first contact, two Enemie Freighters heading SSW, hard but managed to sunk them both.
Was hapy and got back to course to Luson Straight
Was happy not for long after few hours just then torpedos got reloaded - Sonarman reoport Warship, after getting to Station myself heard huge Enemie convoy. After figuring by using Sonar its aprox direction of movement(not course) went for interception and:
*11 of Dec, 1941 around 12.20PM dared and attacked enemie convoy, picked up bigest targets, managed to sunk two Mogami Heavy Cruisers and get away almoust unharmed.
After got away was fixind and reloading torpedos, send Status report, returned to course to Luson Straitm but again:
Now im on 120E 17.30N
*11 of Dec, 1941, 15.00PM, Sonarman reported warship I got to staion, huge enemie task force. I saved game and now for week browsing forums to find best tactic for interception and i cant, its so huge amount of information!!
Maybe someone can help me with tips and what would be best for interception and what tactics to use??
? I just estimated aprox direction with Sonar, its closing possible moving SSW im moving for interception, can see far far on horizon, but i have not much time, my torpedos still reloading so cant go silent running!
Was aproaching untill i saw smaaaaal dot on horizon in periscope, then pressed K for sending "Contact Report" just to identify convoy maybe its US TF and all worries are wrong, ordered surface, was lockin "horizon dot" and pressing K button, almoust surfaced i managed to send "Contact Information" to my Headquoters, wasnt completely surfaced it was very fast, my man are in battle station to realod torpedos ASAP so i dont think they spoted me only canning tower was up, so went complete underwater strait after sending, information on target my team sended was:
"TF sighted, Aprox course 144 aprox speed 13"
Got message reply from Headquaters after few minutes as i remember:
ULTRASx ENEMIE TF IS ESENTIAL FOR ENEMIE PLANS IN AREAxATTACK AT ALL COSTSx
So its now Sve game and im looking for help and advices:dead:

I would steer 144° and try to get ahead of them if you can.
Back off if necessary and surface at flank speed.
Use the course and speed of your contact report to plot a course and an intercept point,
If it's the TF I think it is they are a tough nut to crack. They are heading to the Lingayen Gulf
You will most probably want to attack from long range.
Keep a good eye on them because they will stop and circle the wagons once they enter the gulf.
You will want to attack BEFORE they do.
This bunch sank me more than once.

Don't know what mod's your playing, but RSRD correctly doe's most of the invasion forces correctly.
Brunei Bay and Tarakan are where you'll find invasion forces. Think that's how you spell them. Usually the forces will park right outside those harbors and you can catch them sitting. If you check the correct dates, you should find them with RSRD. I think I have SS with the date and place that I'll have to hunt, couldn't find em yet.
If you're not running mod's with map labels, I would go to the mod section and get one so you'll have all locations.
A better invasion force is the Java force with RSRD. It has about 50 well loaded ships, so they blow up really nice. I've caught it below Jolo at the shipping lanes and chased it all the way to Java. Here's a shot of it.

Thank you!!!
Yes they're heading strait to small gulf of Luzon island, I thought its strange, first convoy was heading towards Borneo so i thought its bug they hading to island to crash?, then thought maybe its Invasion force to Luzon.
yes i will do that way, just need first mark of TF exact position so i can plot their course 144-145 and calculate interception point and get ahead of them on FLank.
If i ping them few times hope they not gonna cjange plans or are there other ways to determin they position at present location?

RIght now TMO 1.7 with RSRD and many smaller mods, but RSRD controls the historical aspect. Ducimas just finished 1.9, so I'll probably move to that when and if I finish this career.

I wouldn't go pinging warships, that's like saying "Hear I am."
You will have to get their course with passive sonar only.
If you have map contacts on than the sonar bearing lines will give you a good enough range to plot their course. Just mark the end of the line and wait 3 minutes and mark their new position. Draw a line through the two marks and extend it to show the course. Use the 3 minute rule to get speed. Measure the distance between the two marks and divide by 100. EX. 500 yards = 5 knots: 1000 yds = 10 knots. I'm sure you already know this but if not............
If you have map contacts off then I'm at a loss because I only play with them on. My playing time is some what limited and I don't want to spend it all just getting course and speed.

Edit I see in another thread you have contacts off so I not much help here. Just not my cup o' tea.
