I wrote the message (linked below) in the SH3 section in response to someone that complained he allways got to close to his target when he was in the process of trying to get ahead of it. And got hammered as a result. Well, no more! The following makes you veer away if you do nothing and fall asleep. :)
My technique makes use of a geometrical drawing that you can make on the map. But which you also need to update frequently as the (true) direction to the target changes due to your movements. If you do this regularly you should be making accurate circles around your target, with a steady range accurate to only a few hundred yards or so. Or when you seem to get too close, backing-off to a safer distance while still keeping up with his movement. It's basically an extension of the pure intercept method, but drawn in an entirely different way. I would even claim it to be much simpler to understand. But you be the judge of that.

I see no reason why this can't be possible in SH4. ... Perhaps only because it's harder (not impossible) to make the drawing without a mod similar to to my tweaking of the mousecursor tools (add the reverse compass scale to all mousetools with lines: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=919104&postcount=1308) I invite everyone to be a copycat. ;)
