View Full Version : Radio and Flying Thingies
I had to answer my own question the other night about Radio detection abilities of enemy planes and ships. What an answer
Patrolling NNE of Midway picked up a very fast "convoy" (formation of about 100 planes) heading NW about 20 miles North of my location also had a TF about 20 miles NW of my location. I had my expert radio operator send a ships update just to see what would happen. The D@&* Flying Thingies changed course and came right at me and in their haste to get me a couple collided.

There are times when one should keep his mouth shut.
Sounds like you just found one of those times. :rotfl2::rotfl2:
About a hundred planes huh, could explain why I've not seen too many around me lately. Thanks. :smug:

PS good screenie
Yeah should have kept quiet, but I wanted to see if they would jump on my radio signal  Oh well it was to late at night to take on a TF anyway :wah:
If anyone is near Midway, Radio me your location :har:

I've never encountered 100 planes, I have enough trouble with one or two. My last patrol off Iwo Jima was a big hot spot for Japanese planes and the patrol mostly consisted of
"contact bearing x"
*check map*
"Yep it's a plane and heading my way"
*dive, speed up time and stay under for an hour or two*
*surface and speed up time*
2 seconds later! (about 15 mins in game time)
"contact bearing x"
*check map*
"Yep it's a plane and heading my way"
*dive, speed up time and stay under for an hour or two*
*surface and speed up time*
2 seconds later!
"contact bearing x"
ARRGH! For gods sake, I'm getting dizzy with all this diving and surfacing :timeout:

Lots of times that happened in real life.
Dick O'Kane was chased off his patrol position by radar equipped planes. He decided that his role had shifted from hunter to hunted and didn't like it a bit. He move elsewhere.
Eugene Fluckey was pestered so much by airplanes all night that he was actually forced to spend a day submerged to let his crew sleep. Fluckey NEVER spent the day submerged when he could be boogying it on the surface. But his crew was exhausted from the yo-yo routine all night for several nights running and he deemed it unsafe to continue as usual.
Welcome to reality! Join the Navy and see the world, they said! :nope:

Oh what I wouldn't give for some nice surface to air missles... Oh wait! It's 1942... Damn! Where's that time machine when I need it?

Don't give Rockin Robbins any ideas, he may just come up with a slightly sub nuclear SAM :haha::haha: :know: might be a good idea at that. :yeah:

Actually, my Slightly Subnuclear Deck Gun is a lie. It also gives you slightly subnuclear AA ammo.:D
Since I don't shoot airplanes I haven't tested it yet. Screenshots appreciated!
