A quite astonishing story from the darkest parts of the Second World War comes to light:

IIRC, there was a Russian chap who did something similar and had a
hard time for it in Russia after the war.

Going to google the details...

I was close. He was Polish. Witold Pilecki. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilecki)
Executed by the polish just after the way and recently given Poland's highest military honors.

He must have smuggled himself into Auschwitz III (Auschwitz-Monowitz), the slave labor camp, judging from his description, and was probably held in Auschwitz I. I don't think he could have got in to Auschwitz II (Auschwitz-Birkenau) or the death camp part of the complex, since they usually didn't let any prisoners out of there for I think obvious reasons.

A quite astonishing story.

He is extremely lucky to be around to tell of his experience.

You'd have to be nuts to smuggle yourself into a high security camp. Glad this bloke survived and can give us these types of stories and insights nearly 70 years later.

Wow, what a story. I wouldn't have wanted to go there for sure. It must have been horror beyond belief....
