I've done a search but I can't see the answer. I know it must be on here but I've looked at 10 threads and can't see it... How do you stop the "Not enough crew in X department" message from coming up? It's been aaaages since I last played SH3 and I can't remember. Do you have to rotate the crew yourself every few hours or is it caused by something else?

And another quick question. What's the most fuel efficient way of getting from a to b? I've been aiming for a low-ish (about 2/3) speed and spend a few hours on the surface and a few hours under to save my diesel.
I change the watch myself. Unless attacking, being attacked and bad weather, I change the watch every 12 hours. I make it a point to keep as many rested as possible. Stress has a negative effect on endurance. Also in bad weather going under and traveling slow has a positive effect.
I find standard speed and 1\3 speed the best to save fuel.

Thanks Rconch. I think that's what I used to do with the crew, but couldn't remember. Just wanted to double check.
I'm guessing you mean 1/3 while submerged and standard while surfaced? I've been doing 6 hours submerged at 1/3 and 6 hours surfaced at standard in both SH3 and 4

While surfaced its 7knots for VII and 10knots for IX boats.
While submerged is 4 and 4.
For best fuel efficiency (surfaced) set speed to a certain amount of knots, give the needle the time to settle on it (or just stop accelerating/decellerating), then ask your navigator for range at current speed. Then repeat for different speed settings to get the best kilometer-age. But for type-7 it is around 8 knots and type-2 6 knots. I don't know if there is a best efficiency when moving submerged. Just that slow speeds hold out longer, and fast drains quickly. But compared to how far you get I haven't got a clue.
The 'not enough crew' message comes when the the crew in that section combined is too tired to function. Either add more crew or replace them with rested ones. But they do not have to be fully rested yet. Brown suits hold out the longer than grey suits. And adding an officer helps out too. If you don't need him elsewhere. But it's better to manually cycle them every few hours or so.

You could try SH3 Commander and use the 'no fatigue' option.
Best speed for IX and VII boats is 8/9 knots on the surface.

As far as crew fatigue goes, I keep a replacement watch rested for the key positions (engine room, watch crew, control room). I'm now in the habit of checking the crew page often when I am going between screens (say map to control room, etc.). As soon as I see a red fatigue marker in any of the key areas, I swap out that watch with the replacements. It gets to be routine and almost automatic after a while.

I rotate my entire crew out every 8 hours in good weather, every 4 hours in bad weather. Never leave anyone in the torpedo rooms - they'll be useless when you need them. Extra crew who don't fit in the quarters go in the unused propulsion room (electric while surfaced, engine while submerged). In GWX they don't fatigue as quickly that way.
As for saving fuel by running submerged, it works in SH3, but don't try it in SH4, or in real life.

if i have understood you peteuplink... you can double click on the compartment with 'not enough crew' and it fills with crew from the crews rest quarters automatically. when a crew member is tired double click on the compartment title and he will be replaced from rest quarters. but there must be crew in these rest quarters to replace the tired crew member.........get me! ? :up:
fuel saving: 7-8 knots up to the Type 7. beyond that i dont know - never made it to the bigger boats!!
fuel consumption goes down in bad weather if you are driving hard. if you are not shadowing merchants/convoys you can drop down to 20 meters below and ride out the storm at 3-4 knots...
