TMO 1.9 100 realism
Third patrol of USS Sturgeon-Salmon class, now out of Fremantle in April 1942.Playing on 100 realism and using historical tactics of the time such as daytime submerged patrol, no night surface attacks, running at high speeds so make more noise, since old boats were not as quiet etc. Some sonar shots.Between the tactics and constantly prematurely exploding and deep running torpedos, tonnage is not so easy to rack up but managed to down a medium tanker(1st patrol, so many faulty torpedos used deck gun which took 94 shells) and a horai maru troopship on second patrol...one of 4 torpedos hit, other three exploded prematurely, 4th ran true and exploded under keel(i assume, was set to 35 feet), ship sank an hour later.
April 1942, en route to Area D4 in South China Sea via Java Sea and Karimata Strait.Make visual contact, go to GQ and dive, begin closing.Sonar reports warships, seas are rough so able to use a little more speed.Soon locate two warships on sonar, up scope but only one Wakatake DD is visual.
Decided to attack since seas were rough, had 125 feet of depth to play with and patches of deep water were within reasonable distance.Closed to just 1100 hards from Wakatake, which was making 14 knots.Other warships was not visible yet, far behind.Soon fired all four bow tubes at the Wakatake, just 100 yards from target torpedos 1, 2, 3 prematurely explode, number 4 ran true but the DD was alerted and made a hard evasive turn to starboard, torpedo passed just in front of the bow.
I went to silent running and 100 feet. The DD and the other(sounded like a smaller escort, never got a visual during the attack) searched for 10 minutes and dropped charges far away. Then pinging started and switched to short scale, heard the roaring of the DD coming in, it had me.As it neared I went to ahead flank to get out from under it, 5 splashes counted, soon many explosions shook the boat, but no damage, they were close but not too close.I wen to 115 feet
After 8 attacks from both vessels(no damage but close ones) the DD came roaring overhead, a charge or charges got lucky, lights flickered, water shot into the conning tower.Damage reports showed bulkhead damage in aft torpedo room and engine rooms...diesel engines 1 and 2 destroyed 3 and 4 at 95 percent damage, all aft tubes destroyed, stern batteries destroyed, trim pump badly damaged, compressor destroyed, port prop shaft destroyed.
As tried to get flooding under control and salave situation, boat took a down angle by stern and stern was plowing into bottom as more charges fell but no damage. Then the small escort could be heard, dropped more charges, one of which knocked my diesel fuel tank out, leaving out 20 percent, had 82.Disels 2 and 3 were finished off and both scopes were wrecked.Bow tubes heavily damaged.
At this point, only option was to get charged to death or try and fight, so ordered ballast tanks blown , deck gun as well as AA gun manned on surfacing.Broke water and went to bridge. The small escort(now ID'd as an aux subchaser was astern heading away. The Wakatake was 1000 yards off starboard giving a wide angle.Ordered deck gun to open fire before the DD could do the same.
The first hit was an expertly placed round, although lucky, the shell hit the torpedo tubes, which caused a huge explosion and will assume effectively disabled the DD because it quiet moving and no fire came in from the turrets, only return fire was from some small machine guns toward the stern.Deck gun continued shelling the DD as the Aux subchaser made a U turn was now coming towards my stern, blasting away with its deck gun, making large splashes nearby.
The aux chasers gun got a hit just behind control room, causing heavy damage. Then it quiet firing as it closed in at max speed, it was going to ram me.I manned the 20 MM AA gun and as ship got very close(could plainly see the gun crew of her deck) I opened fire with AA gunraking the gun crews and deck a small explosion occured, which blew lifeboats off and the aux subchaser veered off to starboard passing very close.I continued to rake the deck from bow to stern with the AA gun and some was returned from her smaller guns after.I hit the depth charge rack which set off an explosion. As the aux chaser moved on, scored two hits at 700 yards with deck gun, including one near stack.
As it passed, continued to shell the Wakatake DD, which now returned fire from forward turret(rounds overshot) three hits in a row apparently disabled her again. After two well placed rounds at her waterline under the stack, a large explosion occured, crew informed me she was going down.
The Aux subchaser continued moving away and never returned fire, had caused her enough damage. My sub was a wreck but they were defeated.
I now had another problem, my sub was sinking by the stern, my decks were awash due to the severe flooding in the stern. We soon sank and then I ordered ballast blown again, which got use back up top, while we watched the Wakatake slowly sink.Dusk soon settled in and after three hours, the DD finally did a death roll and went under.Repairs continued through the night, the flooding was finally contained.
Final tally was 8 crew dead, 11 severely injured, many minor injuries.
Diesels were destroyed, batteries were down to just 30 percent.Best hope was to make it as far as possible on batteries with decks awash.Ran batteries until they were flat, no way to recharge, career over.
This is why an abandon ship feature would be nice, perhaps have a random chance of being rescued or taken POW, maybe depending on how deep into enemy waters you are etc, just a thought:o
