View Full Version : "parallel course" aiming in SH3 & SH4?
Well I'm not newbee in these games, but one thing bothers me. After some practise I had menaged to get a grip on "parallel course" style of aiming, i.e. mine 90 or 270 degrees is target's 90 degrees AOB. That works perfect in SH4, american torpedos do have large angle of attack... about 150 degrees (I think...), and I use to have some incredible shots, two battleships in a row, 5 torpedos each... but never mind. The problem is that this tactic does not work so well in SH3. Last night I had a "perfect" firing solution on C3 cargo, wheater calm, smooth as oil, no wind, distance 1,6 Km, target's speed 5 knots, she is at my 90 degrees, passing by and moving away, my speed 0... gyro-angle tells me interception course is about 10 degrees... I KNOW that is too small but I fire anyway, salvo 3 torpedos, fast, depth 5 meters, contact exploder and I missssss, exactly 100 meters late behind ship, ie. in my opinion 10 degrees at my scope aim! Do my torpedos do not run true? Or am I missing position keeper? Something is wrong.

See if this thread might give you the answer :hmmm:
Ofcourse... the lenght of the sub... :yep: HA, that's it, depends of a distance, you should add few degrees for AOB, if the scope says it is 90 you say 100 and should be fine. But how that this does not have effect in SH4? Position keeper? If I tell you that I use to sunk ships at 4,5 Km (almost maximum rendering distance), with perfect spread shots would you believe me? And now I cant hit a giant thin can infront of me :damn:!!
Thanx mate!
Where is the picture?
Oh, I just noticed the picture is gone ... (I have the link stored in a list and copy & paste it, since thsi question frequently comes up)
Have uploaded a new one, thanks
But how that this does not have effect in SH4? Position keeper?
Yes, the american system of targetting was a bit different, and much more precise. With the position keeper even the errors in range become apparent easier, and the stadimeter in SH4 is also more precise and easy to use than in SH3.
In any case, shooting with Gyro Angles below 10-15º (Your TDC will show you the current solution in real time) is an easy way of eliminating convergence trouble.
But I agree in that the most profitable way to attack is being between two columns of a convoy, in the same course, and shooting with 90º left and right :yep:

Aim about 5-10 Degrees in front of the ship... This will allow for any variations in errors.
:)
Yup, 10 degrees in front, I tried it and works great! I looove the fire power of all tubes at once, but I dont like the idea of sitting in the middle of a convoy :03:, safe distance of 2-3 Km is my way. Does those later electric torpedos (T-30 as far as I remember ) have bigger angle of attack?
