After reading the book Operation Drumbeat (Pauchenschlag) I did a complete redo of the RND and SCR in GWX3 to mimic the book and the last career the one I went from start of war to end for the first time ever, I had a ball.
I felt like I was reliving that book and to make matters even better I had installed IAMBECOMELIFE's merchants so the quality of the ships I was attacking was the best ever in the game.
Well, I started a new career and once I got to the end of 1941 I switched to Lorient and bought a type IXC and off I went.
I started out badly having duds at an unusual rate and making some dumb mistakes (like forgetting to reset the torpedo angle from 20% starboard and thinking I was firing at 0 missing a 10K cargo bad).
Then the weather zucked for most of the patrol but I finished strong and with a IXC's extra fish I barely made 60K.
The next two patrols with the help of the Milchcow U461 I squeezed out every round from the 105 and loosed every fish scoring 77K and 80K to end up with over 217K tons of allied (mostly those Amerikaneren Schweinen) shipping:rock:
Using the deck gun by getting in front of my target so as he maneuvered he did not have firing angle often and at 2500 meters (I would go reverse to maintain that distance) I could still aim for the enemy's canon but I did risk my crew and I am sure I am not alone to lose men in a surface engagement (I did last career) but I picked my angles better this career (I never took on those multi gun ships) and was able to come home each time with all the lads safe.
With almost 700K and July 1942 behind me the rest of the war will be a staying alive exercise with the happy days behind me the hunted days are ahead and the real test.
I admit. I have become a pansy kaleun. I avoid contact with an AS vessel where I use to charge in I now only attempt penetrating a convoy when I have the right angle or I back off and forget it.
I am no longer a U-warrior. I am more a U-assassin or sniper not looking for a fight just an easy kill.
Still I must say the Pauchenschlag patrols are the most fun of these careers now and that too is in line with the Drumbeat book.
