View Full Version : GWX3; 3 Pauchenschlag patrols = 217K tons

After reading the book Operation Drumbeat (Pauchenschlag) I did a complete redo of the RND and SCR in GWX3 to mimic the book and the last career the one I went from start of war to end for the first time ever, I had a ball.
I felt like I was reliving that book and to make matters even better I had installed IAMBECOMELIFE's merchants so the quality of the ships I was attacking was the best ever in the game.

Well, I started a new career and once I got to the end of 1941 I switched to Lorient and bought a type IXC and off I went.
I started out badly having duds at an unusual rate and making some dumb mistakes (like forgetting to reset the torpedo angle from 20% starboard and thinking I was firing at 0 missing a 10K cargo bad).
Then the weather zucked for most of the patrol but I finished strong and with a IXC's extra fish I barely made 60K.

The next two patrols with the help of the Milchcow U461 I squeezed out every round from the 105 and loosed every fish scoring 77K and 80K to end up with over 217K tons of allied (mostly those Amerikaneren Schweinen) shipping:rock:

Using the deck gun by getting in front of my target so as he maneuvered he did not have firing angle often and at 2500 meters (I would go reverse to maintain that distance) I could still aim for the enemy's canon but I did risk my crew and I am sure I am not alone to lose men in a surface engagement (I did last career) but I picked my angles better this career (I never took on those multi gun ships) and was able to come home each time with all the lads safe.

With almost 700K and July 1942 behind me the rest of the war will be a staying alive exercise with the happy days behind me the hunted days are ahead and the real test.

I admit. I have become a pansy kaleun. I avoid contact with an AS vessel where I use to charge in I now only attempt penetrating a convoy when I have the right angle or I back off and forget it.
I am no longer a U-warrior. I am more a U-assassin or sniper not looking for a fight just an easy kill.

Still I must say the Pauchenschlag patrols are the most fun of these careers now and that too is in line with the Drumbeat book.

Nice, I'm currently mid November 1941, based at St. Nazaire in the 7th/13th Flotilla with a VIIC and plan to transfer to Lorient and the IXC soon after Operation Drumbeat begins. My last career I stayed closer to home in a VIIC because I do love that boot but knew I was missing out on a major part of the Atlantic war.

Maybe we'll cross paths on the high seas.

You might consider opening the RND file in mission builder to add shipping off the US coast. The GWX3 Rnd was sparse to me and not in keeping with the book. That is IMO.
I would offer my SCR and RND but I use ships from the old Med Payware that are written into my mis files so it would not work

Well, as far as being more aggressive I do admit I have become DC shy but at just under 700K at mid war I am sure Onkle Karl is not too disappointed in me.

The last career I was successful in surviving at this point I stayed away from the convoy lanes completely hunting in the SA and even IO then transferred to Norway where I only shot at very long range at passing convoys and was already turned away before any fish hit (which was 10% at best). I wanted to survive more than die for the Fatherland
(Ooooops, I mean Sie land aus meine Familie:rotfl2:)

Do I understand you correctly?

Did you pay for the Med addon? :hmmm:

No, I "advised" them and beta tested it as they built it.

I wanted certain ships added for me so I advised them to make the early versions of the Black Swans labeled as Frigates in the game but known as sloops. The Erget, Bittern and Grimsby classes and a cat 3 DE Hunt class. I also suggested the Arethusa class and got them to ax a number of bad ideas.
So, I have the ingredients to make the convoy escorts more accurate.
In GWX3 convoy escorts are often cat 4 DDs as well as Cat 2 Frigates but that allows for fleet DDs in convoys, never happened, they were with the battle fleets and are actually inferior A/S ships.
When I mod the RND and SCR I make all the convoy escorts class 2 and 3 and only 4 when I name them as Hunt s or similar escort types.

The Med add on was greatly inferior in almost ever way to GW and I never played it other than testing it; way too gamey.
I did like the fact I saw a lot of Luftwaffe bombing of ships in the med.

People here expect and want a higher standard but somehow do not get the fact others do not mod and if it can't be put in with a CD/DVD and clicked on they won't be modding themselves.
I sometimes play various COD but I do not mod them, not interested. there are SH buyers like that.
They did well with it but it is not something we would do.

I got what added to what was missing in SH3 (and still is in GWX3) and most important IMO
