Vendor,

do you guys even want the Åland islands? It's not like they produce much, they are just a kind of tax haven, and place for Finns to get snus.

So, say you guys went to war, do they have a manditory draft/conscription?

Finland already has a mandatory military service for all males (well you can go to prison instead if you want to) during peace time. So, that in mind, there wouldnt be many to draft who already havent gone thru the service if war was to break out.

Tho, I'd imagine that those like me, would be drafted for supporting stuff to free up the one's who have gone thru the full service for more important jobs. :hmmm:

More lobby to get Finland fully allied with Sweden and Norway.
Nordic defence cooperation is allready very far developed.
I personally have nothing against making it official, there really is only positives with this.

Only Baltic coutry i would personally pass is Estonia. They take their defence seriously and develop it, others seem to rely only on NATO.

Tough Swedens massive force reductions in the past years limit the assistance it could give.
Swedens strengths are its Air Force and Navy, these units could be deployed quickly and would be of great value.
Army in its present form and strength would probably be deployed mainly in the Lapland and into lesser extent in the Baltics.

Well, there's a catch that I forgot to tell. In return, Sweden expects that the countries they offer their aid to, will do the same in case Sweden comes under attack. :DL

I often wonder if the United States would benefit from a compulsory military service obligation (2 years)?

I certainly had fun, but here the compulsion is only 8-11 months and you only recive training, to go on a toru abroad you have to sign on as a contracted soldier.

Oh I can think of alot of reason to go here, and also many good reasons not to attack.

Let it be known, that while we stay out of trouble, we will bite back if trouble get to us. That is basically the thought of our military defense.

And we've stayed out of war (on our soil) for about 200 years. Some see that as a sign of weakness, I rather see it as a sign of intelligence.

Reason no. 1: Plenty of immigrant Finns live there. :)

Personally I don't have a problem with Swedish people, or at least all of them. However, I do have a problem with the Swedish National Party which is a party in the Finnish parliament. Yes, you foreigners, Finnish-Swedes have their very own political party with members in the Finnish parliament, a minister in the present government and even a MEP.

This party forces all Finns to learn to speak Swedish in the school when they are young. Even in the university there is a forced Swedish course which one has to pass in order to graduate from there. The dialect of Swedish that is spoken in Finland isn't even that close to proper Swedish which is spoken in mainland Sweden but still this minority has a special status in Finland.

Finnish-Swedish people also have their own universities in Finland (!) where everything is tought in Swedish and it is easier for Finnish-Swedes to get into those. Finnish-Swedish families also have a lot of inherited property in Finland which dates back to the times when Finland was a colony of Sweden.

Åland is the island roughly between Finland and Sweden (closer to Finland though) which has a Swedish speaking majority. They have no obligations to give service in Finnish although Finns live on that island too and the island is a part of Finland. Åland has a special status though giving them tax exemptions and also men from Åland don't have to go to the Finnish military.

When there is talk about making the position of Finnish-Swedes any worse Sweden also comments on the issue in favour of the Finnish-Swedes. So I can't say I like the Finnish-Swedes or Swedes too much I'm afraid.

Speaking of Åland, there was/is a news bit on tellytext saying that Åland is starting to lean towards independency or breaking off and joining Sweden if the status of swedish education etc. keeps weakening in Finland. :yeah:

I think that is linked to some corruption within the Swedish National Party. Their minister has been living in a cheap house that is owned by some closely linked organisation.

Maybe we should sell Åland to the Russians, I'm sure they'd get a better deal with them. Swap it for Karelia.

Stealth Hunter,

I wish Finns would base their sense of national pride on something else then remembering the World War 2 and our time as co-belligerants of the Axis nations.
