Just a quick question my fellow Kaluens, how much does the type XXI cost in April '44? Trying to save up, so far I have 16,000 in November '42. If it's not that much I might just get a type IX to carry me through '43.
Anyone else using the XXI at the moment? I'm using GWX 3.0 Gold and SH3 Commander 3.2.

There's an easy way of finding out.
I believe it's either in your basic.cfg located in the data folder of the Silenthunter3 main folder, or in your Type21 folder located in the submarine folder, also in the data folder.

I'm not at home right now so can't check for you but there is a mod by Wreford-Brown that allows you to choose the year you can get a XXI if your not too fussed about historical accuracy :hmmm:

I don't know if it's right or not but I just found a figure saying it will cost me 20,000 renown which is way more than I thought it would be:o
Instead of a mod how easy is it to just change a value for date/renown cost etc.?
20,000 is steep but I can probably earn that much before April '44, but I don't think I can take command of a IXC/40 which is disappointing...

I just had a look for you, If i've looked at the correct part of the basic.cfg file, renown required for a type XXI is 20000.

edit: sorry post was a tad late!

Before you do so you should make a back up of your basic cfg. file.
Just open your basic cfg. file and find the line for renown cost of which ever U-boat you want to upgrade to, and manually change the cost value.
You can do this for any upgrades to your U-boat that you want. When your satisfied with your changes, select save changes when closing your file. Oh and one more thing, I wouldn't perform these changes untill you are starting a new career, or you have finished a patrol. Do not make changes mid patrol.
Before in stock Sh3,the sub cost 30.000......:)

It should be very easy to get a type XXI, each patrol I usually get around 800 renown, more if I engage a juicy convoy. The boat comes with everything you need, after you have it the only thing you'll spend renown on is acoustic torpedos.

Dont the russians have a sub that looks almost like a complete ripoff of this thing?

Not really, at least no more than the Tang class. The XXI was extensively analyzed and features implemented in others designs, but not copied wholesale like the Tu-4 was copied from the B-29. The Zulu for example had three shafts, a rear torpedo room and a conventional pressure hull (not an asymmetric "8" figure).

I had a similar problem with Type IX.Through SH3Commander I use "Historic U-boat availability dates" and "Realistic career length".
So in October 39 Type IX becomes available and costs 9000 renown points.\Second flotilla\
But every time SH3Commander retire my Kaleun (after 6-7 patrol's) before I could gain enough renown, and when continue my career with a new Kaleun I lose the renown and start with 1500.:nope:
I'm trying to change the cost, but I can't find the part of Basic.cfg that I'm supposed to edit :hmmm:
My solution to the problem was to change the value of my renown points
instead of changing cost value.
Just go to: My documents\sh3\data\cfg\careers\"player"\patrols_. Open "Patrols_" (in my case file name is Patrols_0) near the bottom there is a line "delta renown=****" and change the value. MUST BE IN PORT!!!
Good luck

Certainly the quickest and easiest but will only work if the boat has reached its availability date.

Yes I forgot to mention that. Type IX becomes available in Oct 1939 and I usually do the trick in Nov-Dec 1939. :)

I'm on my first patrol in roughly 4 years, trying to decide if I should get the type VIIC or the IXC come mid 1940...they both play so differently I remember: the VII is easier with escape and evade but the IX has all those eels in its hold...:shifty:

22 torpedo's!!? I forget there were that many...and the 105 gun:hmm2:
I'm thinking the IXC should serve me well in the mid Atlantic, should make for some interesting patrol logs...
The IX is basically a commerce raider, best suited for hunting distant waters where ships sail solo or unescorted.
For convoy battles, you have a far better chance of survival in a type VII, due to better maneuverability and faster diving times.
I prefer a type VIIB until about Dec 1941, then I take a IX to the American eastern seaboard and the Caribbean. I want a VIIC from Jan of 1943 on.
The XXI is only available for a few months in 1945. At most I got 2 patrols with it. Didn't find it all that interesting.

The IXD2 being the ultimate.

If memory serves the main purpose of the type IX's extensive range and torpedo compliment was to allow it to stalk a convoy and attack the same convoy repeatedly.

I read in wikipedia that the Type IXD2 didn't see any action, like the VIIC/42

IXD2's were used on patrols though, in fact in 1945 the "tommies" sank U-864 a IXD2 near Fedje, Norway as it was trying to carry canisters of Mercury, blueprints and jet engine parts, and Scientists to Japan as part of the German/Japanese military trade pact.
During that action the captain of U-864 a "Ralf-Reimar Wolfram" attempted to sink the submarine H.M.S. Venturer, which ended up torpedoing and sinking him instead, which is also the first (and only) instance of a submarine sinking another submarine while both were submerged during WWII

Excellent documentary about U-864 and its sinking by HMS Venturer.
