December '43, my mission: photo carriers located in Manila Bay, Philipeans.
While heading north by way of Makassar Strait (west of Celebes), I came acrossed a large slow convoy. I moved into position and waited. My scope was spoted by an escorting Fubuki DD, a MK 18 took him out, down the throat shot at 1000 yds. Oddly enough, the other two escorts did not come a runnin. When the major part of the convoy came into range, all hell broke loose. I ended up claiming 3 large tankers of around 10,000 tons, 2 medium tankers of around 5000 tons, and by a torp that missed its mark, medium split freigther of 3500 tons. Out of torps, I headed for the Submarine tender located located just south of Ternate in the Molucca sea to refit. Along the way, I encounterd several junks, sampans, and 200 ton fishing boats and claimed them all with my Bofors. When I reached the sub tender, I replenished my torps and tought I was going to be on my merry way to complete my mission, I was wrong.
On my way back out to sea, another large convoy appeared. I was still within range of the tender to refit at will and took full advantage of the fact! I ended up claiming another 3 large tankers 10000 tons, 3 medium tankers 5000 tons, 2 composite freighters 4500 tons ,1 large split 8000 tons, and 2 small old engine afts (each took three torps to sink) 1500 tons and 3 Akizuki DD. After firing a few torps, I would instantly refit to keep my reloads a full.
I then went to Manila Bay and my radar picked up 6 DD running around. I spoted a medium modern split freighter 3000 tons and took her out with a MK 14 at around 6000 yds. All of the DD headed to the stricken ship and started circling the around the freighter.
I then made a strait line to what I was hoping to be nice big juicy fleet carriers, but turned out to be 2 disapointing Chitose seaplane tenders. I took one out at 4500 yards with 4 torps. I got out of the bay as quick as I could.
On my way back to Perth, I came acrossed a lone modern passinger liner 6500 tons. I also ended up claiming a few most junks and such. I ended up ending the patrol in the 2nd week in January '44.
My total was 11 tankers, 8 freighters (not counting junks), 4 DD, and 1 Chitose, in all approx 128,000 tons.
