View Full Version : Not so much of CTD..
Hi guys,
New to the forum, and somewhat not new to Silent Hunter. Started playing back when Silent Hunter III came to be. Anyway, have a small problem.
So, I was on my 6th patrol, and I was about 2 hours in(real time), and had sunk some awesome tonnage. However during that extent the game periodically(happened 2-3 times) will MINIMIZE to desktop(like I pressed tab when I didn't). I can click back in and keep playing. However on the 4th time, it will just CTD.
Needless to say I lost my patrol.
Currently running, 1.4(no Uboat addon), with Mods(in order)
Webster's no crew fatigue for 1.4v and 1.5v
Webster's missing voices fix
Webster's ship maneuvering fix
Webster's upgraded Deck guns v1
Aircraft_reflections
Real_Environment_Mod
Lite Fog V2 + 100' Underwater Visibility
Also, the game did not have this phenomenon when I had these installed(in order)
Real_Environment_Mod
Lite Fog v2 + slow water
Webster's no crew fatigue for 1.4v and 1.5v
Aircraft_reflections
So, either WEBSTER's stuff, or the other Lite Fog mod may be causing this?
Also, its worth mentioning that it has randomly minimized to the desktop while I was at port(in the command room, where you start your patrol, setup crew, etc).
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks guys, and Happy Hunting!:salute:
A game minimizing is almost always caused by something taking focus away from it on the OS level. It's likely some program (malware? virus?) you have running in the background is causing the game to minimize. As for crashing after the fourth time, games tend to destabilize the more they're defocused.

Or overheating.
Usually overheating will simply cause performance to degrade gradually until the system BSODs to protect itself. Always something to look in to, though. A clean, cool computer has a happier, longer life. :D
Lite Fog v2 + slow water
sorry off topic,
i searched for this mod and could only locate a "light fog + underwater viability"
i ask because id be interested in a light fog plus slower water movement. anyone know where this is?

I wondering if you have a background service starting up that causes the drop to desktop. Usually my anitvirus (Norton) would do that to me sometimes for things like update or great time to run a scan. :shifty:

On the subject of my problem. Last time it seemed to start to CTD more then minimize. I don't have any programs running that could minimize it.
Going to try to figure it out..
Thanks for the help so far guys.

I agree with the above on minimizing, something is taking away the focus, and probably not the problem but on my computer I run two monitors, if I accidently click in the second monitor it will minimize.
I am not familiar with the mods you are using, could there be any that are changing the keyboard commands? Is it possible you may be hitting a key that causes it?

thanks Knox! i searched high and low and was coming up empty handed, this is just what i was looking for. thank you!
also, since you already lost your patrol, it maybe worthwhile to remove all mods, start a new career and see if you get the CTD without any mods running.
i oddly enough was having a problem (although it was a game loading problem) were when i reloaded all my mods via a mod profile save in JSGME the game wasnt loading. I unloaded all mods, loaded them one by one by hand, and was able to get past the saved game loading screen. a bit different than your situation but oddly enough it may be worth a shot...

I use alacrityPC to get rid of as much background stuff as I can. For some reason I still have to shut off a few things manually also. I also use ready boost, although I am not sure it does anything as I can't see any difference. I use 2x RAM for ready boost.

I had the same minimization of the screen problem, occuring at 1/2 hour intervals. Upon researching the cause, I found that it was the installation of the new AVG 9.0 program. I have read that uninstalling AVG 9.0 along with user settings and then reinstalling it, will solve the problem. I am going to try that now. Hope this helps others also.

its not an issue with any combination of my mods, those combinations of my mods are fine however i never tested them with aircraft reflections so i dont know about that mod.
the jsgme has hidden (invisable) backup and install files that "keep" corruptions so its always the first thing to do when you suspect mod issues is move your mods to the desktop (one by one not a group move or you'll move the corrupted backups too)
then delete the jsgme "mods" folder with the corrupted hidden files.
run jsgme to create a brand new "mods" folder and replace your mods and activate them.
that will fix most problems with corruptions
if that doesnt help you could have something like ram or video card getting ready to fail with your system so you should run a testing program to check your system out.
Hey guys,
So, I removed the mods and put them back. Still had a few issues, however it seemed better. It wasn't crashing. So, I suspected my video card or unknown processes doing it.
I decided to do a few upgrades(I really needed them).
I did have
AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.4ghz
1.5 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6200 256mb Video Card
Needless to say, I got around 6-7 FPS, and I manged to finish 6 patrols on that...
Upgraded to this
AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.4ghz
2 GB of RAM
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3650 512 MB Video Card
22" Widescreen LCD Monitor(got it from a friend)
Now I run A LOT faster. Main screen is 100+ FPS, In Sub is at 50-70 FPS, and External runs 30 - 46ish.
It's like going from Dial up to Cable, or going from no video card to a video card. Simply Amazing..
Only problem I have is that the "Native" or as they say Optium screen resolution for this monitor is 1680x1050, however when I select that the desktop is cut off of the monitor, although I can move the mouse and the screen will shift. But I can use 1600x1200 and it looks fairly good, and that's what I run in SH4.
No conflicting issues with Mods so far, I am going to re install the rest when I get back to port. WEBSTER, thanks for the info on how to reinstall them.
VERY pleased with the new upgrades :yeah:

Wow! 6200 video card was working darned hard to run the game at all! Very few have been successful at playing SH4 with that one. You were doing well considering the equipment you had. You would be a great help to others trying to run our favorite game on marginal equipment.
After the last patch I'd have to say that SH4 is the most stable game I own.
Indeed. I run it with what I'd call about 60% of the graphics settings on with this (http://docs.google.com/View?id=dc3smcbq_147g6dnzdhd) computer. Not too shabby.
