View Full Version : Reducing duds (Torp angle)

I'm normaly a Uboat captain and I can kill the enemy with relative ease with nice 70-110° hits of the torps. Now I know the US had problems with crushed firing pins at those angles.. At what angle do I need to the the enemy now?

P.s. I'm not sure I like the TDC yet :)

US torpedoes had problems when they impacted at or near 90 degrees. The BUO neglected to take into account the higher speed of the Mk14, and the effect it would have on the impact detonator. When the torpedo struck at what should have been the optimum impact angle, traveling at 46 knots, the force at impact bent the fireing pin guides and prevented detonation. If the torpedo impacted at angles other than 90, it's high speed was offset by the "odd" angle, and the pin guides remained intact on impact.

So, the bottom line: Early on, do not fire at what should be the "perfect" impact angle of 90 degrees. If you're playing with the "dud torpedoes" option ticked you're gonna have migraines!:damn: Only later on in the war after the problems were resolved, could you fire at 90. Hope that helps alittle.;)

I knew that I was hoping some1 told me to make 30-60° shots :)

But I just tried again and I missed 4 torps while according to all my little knowledge my inputs where correct.. guess I need to redo the tdc tutorial again :)

looney, 30-60 degree shots will help, but not as easy to pull off.As far as the TDC goes, you will find it is far superior to the u boat method.The position keeper is great, enter info, it updates it, unless major changes in the course, direction, AOB, you can shoot without the scope and only have to update the bearing, which you don't really have to, but it helps insure a better shot.

Example:Freighter closing , take scope observation, AOB is 40 degree starboard, enter it in to TDC, hit the red send to TDC button.Then hit the Position Keeper button, then enter a bearing and range, send it.The TDC keeps track of the changing angle.Unless angle changes drastically, you do not have put in a new angle for the solution.Although I usually do one more along with bearing/range just to insure, but it keeps track of it.This was a major advantage US subs had over other nations.

I hate shooting torpedos on manual with U boat, have to fire from attack map and constantly update the info.Fleetboats, can stay at scope and update info, esp a help when playing on 100 realism.
