View Full Version : the merchant from hell
Well it Findley happened . OBERLEUTNANT Z. S. ERWIN DUSCHEK and the crew of U-45 were lost sometime on the 25 Jul 40 . We were on our 7th patrol just west of Gibraltar , CG 86 , when I , ( being more aggressive ) went just a little too far in the aggressiveness mode , got cocky , over confident and careless and lost the boat . To make a long story short . After reaching my patrol area and spending about 4 days there , we were sailing straight west from the very entrance to the Med. sea , when I decided to start the trek home , or at least start heading that way anyway . Maybe the hunting would be better farther north around the southern approaches . But anyway . It was dawn , weather clear and seas calm . We were smack dab in the middle of the shipping lanes when we started get'n contacts with one small convoy after another , about 2 or 3 hours apart ( 1 armed trawler , 1 small merchant , 1 large merchant and usually a tanker of various sizes ) . COOL ! Not to much maneuvering here , man they were come'n right down the middle of the plate , if ya know what I mean ( American baseball slang ) . With each swing of my torpedo's , I was knock'm out of the park ( sorry more baseball slang ) . I had 3 more torpedo's left and came across a lone merchant ( the merchant from hell ) . I figured , hey , calm , clear , I'll do a deck gun job on this guy . I surfaced the boat and started taking damage right away . I tried to crash dive but too late . He was armed , and knocked out my forward torpedo room , severely damaging tubes 2 and 3 . I set the repair guys to work , then I reeled around and put the #4 right in his bow . He just starting to nose down a tad when I surfaced to deck gun him again , you know with the # 2 and 3 torpedos temp out of order and all . Well I guess he wasn't quit'n . He hit me again and I was paralyzed and only about 700 meters away to his port side . I must have got'n it right in the ol sweet spot , I guess . Becuse this time when i dove it was , straight down , do to the no engines or very very slow responding engines anyway . My fate was sealed . At about 260 meters I crushed like a beer can on my buddy Fred's forehead . Right now I'm gonna take a career break , play a few single missions , build my new rig and start a new career in about 2 or 3 weeks from now . Jerry :88)
Wow, that sucks. Any idea on what class the merchant was, and its armament? I would think small stuff like 20mm? Playing GWX3 right?

The bad news is that if you had won the gun fight, you would probably have still lost the boat. At 700 meters the explosion of that ship getting shelled is likely enough to take you down with it.
Best to do your gunnery between 3km-3.5km when they are armed if you want to stay alive. They are crazy good shots sometimes once you get under the 3km mark.

:haha: The opening was slick. Made me laff there.
Sorry for your loss though :(

Great story. Goes to show that even the lowly merchies can't be underestimated.

Wow...he sank your sub and your rig. That was indeed the merchant from hell. ;)

Be more aggressive!
My U 46 was upgraded to a VIIC and we were on patrol around BF 17 in November 1940. Got a sound contact and chased him down to find a large merchant going 6 knots. Foolishly I attacked on the surface, ended up in a gun battle and received some damage also to the bow tubes with minor flooding. Having a veteran crew, the repairs are made at periscope depth and finally put some eels in him and got him down.
What I am most disappointed in was my artillery crew and officer, certified in artillery, could not hit the broad side of a barn. Sea was calm and my speed was under 10 knots.:arrgh!:

Now we know it's Balz who writes all these "Be more aggressive" messages after he's done with cleaning papa's office.
Thanks for the story. Next time you get cocky remember to have a careful visual investigation of any armaments of target's deck (periscope, 300 m distance helps), and then decide to shell it right from its stern or bow - this way you minimize their chances of being able to aim at you, or you make them maneuver.

It's a pity you didn't get a screenshot, but if your using GWX are you sure you didn't come across a Q Ship? (You'd obviously need both GWX3.0 and the Q Ship mod).
@ Abd_von_Mumit
I'll lay claim to the 'BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!!' and 'SINK EM ALL' messages if you don't mind :03:

Hi Jerry.
It sounds like you had quite a time "at bat" slugging away at the ole' Gibraltar batting cages!

I thought for some reason that that mod was already included in GWX3.0. Can you provide a quick link? I don't recall it from the downloads section.

I never seem to survive long enuf to find armed merchant shiping. I always get over eager for the quick and easy port kills. The last one went ok, but I had to run like hell, dodging depth charges the whole way out. No kills on that one sadly, but at least my crew and I all made it out alive and the ship didn't get too beat up. The one befor that didn't go so well. I snuck in runing silent, loosed eels killing eight targets that were all at their moorings, two distroyers an armed trawler, two t-class subs and three lonly fishing boats that looked like they needed some torpido lovin'. None of the ships tried to run, or got the opertunity to, and I was feeling very proud of my self as it was the bigest single patrol kill count I had achieved to date. I was on my way back from a patrol in the Irish sea and as such enterd the port from the west and was leaving to the east. All the suden some thing goes bang and I have serious flooding. I pop up to the surfus, why I decided to do that I don't realy know, and am promptly cut down by the port defenses that I had forgoten were there. It was such a small port I didn't expect them to have it mined.
I know attacking ports is a bad idea, but they are just too good a target to pass up. And finding ships at sea is hard :O:.

The Q ship mod is not part of GWX 3.0?
Tried twice with filefront to d\l the mod today and both times it stated the file could not be found.
I am on a dial up connection.
If anyone tries to get it and is successful, leave a post here, maybe it is just me and my connection.
Thanks

Yep you definitely need to get this mod. Q-ships are a NASTY suprise indeed. Makes you rethink daylight deckgun engagements.
I believe you can DL it from jimbuna's FF page, thats where I got it.

Will try it aftet hitting the harbour. I too feel too tempted to use my deck gun too often. :)Just use your deck gun at night more and you should be alright. Aim for the search lights first, makes it alot harder for them to find your location.:salute:
No luck downloading this file at either location.
Can someone send me the file and where it goes?
It has got to be my lousy dial up connection preventing me from getting thru.
